A trojan installs software in your computer so that your computer can be access by someone else. There are two lines of defence. One is to use a good virus software to prevent the trojan code from getting into you computer. And to be really sure you should also have a firewall like ZoneAlarm (www.zonealarm.com). It blocks the ports that the trogan uses to listen and exchange data.

Here's a great site for future reference. A "database of information security (infosec) and anit-hacker information." http://advice.networkice.com/advice/default.htm
Although some info is specific to Network Ice products, there's also great reference material. 36 documents about Back Orifice.
