View Full Version : ¿Is this forum going to allow the use of the "N" word next?

I see more & more use of F**k; **** you; you're a fairy; you suck; f**k you, I am your bitch, Brent; etc.
¿What's next, the "N" word or abstracted versions of it?
I understand that "Considering the real-time nature of this forum,...." (Rules, Policies & Disclaimers); this can happen.
However, when I see moderators participating in threads where the above is used....I wonder.
[This message has been edited by chacmool (edited 06-21-2000).]
Well, I see one can no longer type the full "F" word.
[This message has been edited by chacmool (edited 06-21-2000).]
huh?
sometimes people use 'bad words' to emphasize emotions in their text, as it is usually harder to Interpret what one means on just using text, without actually seeing or hearing the person

When we start to crack down people just start bitc... er, complaining about how we don't give them enough room, and how they deserve free speech, yadayadayada.

If you all believe it's necessary and maintains our rights....that's ok by me. It just seems somewhat out of control, at times.
I've actually never thought that it has been outta hand, IMO

Well, for example; in a post entitled "How to uncap speed on cable", Mr. Hamilton,s first reply was "Hey Bozzman- f u c k you, Australia is going...."
If that is not "outta hand"...that's ok by me. I respect you position on the subject.

chacmool, true, true. I have to agree with you 100%, and that's the reason I have moved on to other forums. I only came back this morning for a visit, to find nothing has changed. It's a shame... http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/frown.gif

Oh that sort of thing, Yeah I agree with you there 100% I mean we can go around editing everyones posts who uses a bad word, but that would take some time and many many complaints from people about Freedom of speech bla blah blah. We aren't going to go around removing every bad word we see in a post. Only the Really Bad ones we WILL edit
You know what I do when I see a bad word? I just ignore the words and don't let it bother me, heh. If you let it bother you then the other persons reason for posting it has worked. Don't let them intimidate you, just look the other way and say "What an idiot" LOL
If you go through life letting little things like that bother you so much, you won't get anything productive done!

Never said I was offended and have accepted all your responses.
Just stated my perception of seeing more cussing and asked how far it was going to be allowed to go.
Complaints about free speech, decisions about editing, evaluating which words are bad(?) and assessing you audience; are subjects that are clearly in your arena.
This forum has, no doubt, participation from all ages & levels of expertise. It takes a stand on illegal activities. It is my humble opinion, that the forum would be better served if it took a somewhat stronger stand on vulgarity. I cringe at the idea of someones teenage child asking for, or seeking, techinical advice and receiving and/or reading f**k you, and the like, response(s).
I don't see the value added.
I cringe at the idea of someones teenage child asking for, or seeking, techinical advice and receiving and/or reading f**k you, and the like, response(s).
98% of the teenage population curses daily (or that I know). You would be surprised how many teenagers that I have talked to come to these boards for help and curse themselves.
Lemme tell you, "f*ck you" is nothing compared to what todays teenagers experience in High School. Bad words are mild compared to what they talk about these days. I'm 20 right now, graduated in '98 and I've been there, High School is nothing but pervission. My sister, who is 15, goes there now and Boy the Storys I hear from her mouth! I don't like it either, it down right scares me and saddens me that those things go on. I wish they would stop, but i don't see that happening anytime soon. The media flaunts these things all over the place! On TV, on the Radio in magazines. Have you ever read one of those Cosmopoliton Magazines and stuff like that? I have, my sister reads them and it's nothing but Sex, Sex, Sex. It's a nasty world out there, and the media is promoting bad things all the time.
We will try to keep this forum as clean as we can, Mild cussing we won't mess with as it is just that, Mild. If it's real bad and causes a problem, or is just down vulger and nasty we will edit it.

I believe it is the moderators and administrators, of a forum, that set the tone.
If you all feel that the mild cussing is necessary in disscussing techicnical issues...that is for you all to decide. I am simply providing feedback.
If you all have a line that you will not allow crossing...that is for you all to determine.
My feedback may, or may not, have merit or value added. Again, that is for you all to ascertain.
You have read my post(s) and stated your views. I thank you for taking the time, out of your busy schedules, to do so.
Everyones feedback has merit and importance. We hear and listen to all suggestions/comments/feedback/flames/and praises. This forum would not be such a good public learning place as it is without the support of the people. We, of course, tailor this site and the forums to the people so that they can use them as they are intended.
I'm not saying cussing is or isn't neccassary to communicate technical issues. All i'm saying is people cuss, if not for the simple reason to only bring out some emotion and to "get a point across" to people.
it's just used to convey emotion. If it gets out of hand though we will edit the posts. Mild cussing may or may not be neccassary but it's not for you or me to decide, it's for the person making the post. Only if they take it to the extreme or get out of hand with it in their post will we edit it.

I personally find this to be a non-issue. But I do want to point out sometjing that a teacher once told me. He said "cursing and swearing is just ignorance of the English language." For some reason that has stuck with me. I'm not saying that I don't curse, but I don't use it in everyday conversations like so many people do these days.
Just Mark, I don't either. I don't use it in regular conversations, talking out loud. It just turns people off sometimes. And I really don't feel comfortable saying it, actually speaking and having the words come out of my mouth just makes me feel very uncomfortable.
I dunno, maybe it's my religous influence, i dunno, but i just make sure to aviod saying them.
The only time i use them is in Text, where i don't have to actually say them, instead I'm typing them, heh. But usually because it's so much harder to show what one is intending to mean with Text. Because people will interpret that text in different ways.

You know I am a Christian and would orefer not to see profanity on this site period. I also know that those who can not think of a more creative way to speak will also tend to use profanity to express their passion because the know no other way to get the point expressed. Profanity is a part of life and to be honest I have many friends to include Christians that struggle with breaking the habit. I myself while serving in the Marine Corps learned to abuse language in this way and have since learned a better way to communicate. I would much prefer the great tech support the moderators supple than an internet watch dog. I can see past the text. I once walked that road and I know where it is and where it came from...
Although I agree that moderates could give a simple and curtious reminder when they post on a topic that has flagrant abuse such as Nick's first attempt. I have come to know since his first post he is 19 and I believe at that age I also had the same fire. So I understand him as I am sure most do.
Hey we all have to live here and make room for one another. Even Jesus spent most of his time with the sinners, tax collectors, harlots and the degenerates of his time.

As the popularity of speedguide grows, it's inevitable that we'll see more and more people, and some of them will act very immature. So, a moderator becomes less of a forum leader, and more of a damage control specialist. I'm not peachy keen happy with it, but with dozens of new topics and posts popping up every day, there's no way I can be cognizant of every word written here. Otoh, you have less of my long winded posts to deal with. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
I will post a friendly reminder about language in the most active forum.

Hmmm.. I find mild cussing to be inappropriate in any public forum. Like stated before, people of all ages visit these so-called "tech help" forums looking for answers. I have indeed been helped many times by good people here. However, I would not want my kids (if i had them) to see the stuff that's posted here by some of the more ignorant people.
A few key people in my life (past teachers, friends) have stated things that have stuck with me as well thru the years, being "People who swear casually usually have nothing important to say" , or "You swear because you can't see past it" etc etc. Needless to say, when someone of such a value in yer life tells you things like that, you tend to listen.
I, personally, dont' use 'em, and never will, never have. People find me odd for that (cuz it's so rare these days), and i dont' like to be around it. And when I come to a site dedicated to cable modems, i'm expecting NOT to see it. I'm expecting to see countless questions regarding cable modem/dsl info, with thoughtful, insightful answers given to help the newbie out.
I think it's a real shame that people have such little respect for each other anymore. I'd never even think of showing such disrespect for ANY other person by using such vulgar language, in person or online in text. I can't fathom being so rude and careless about their needs or wants, thinking that whatever I have to say merits insulting them by the use of such profanity.
There are other ways to convey emotions, be it capital letters, or asterisks around a word. one has truly mastered self-control and discipline when one can get his message across civilly and with respect, no matter how angry or agitated he might be. It takes a lot to learn that. Sadly, few can master it.
I am the moderator of a smaller board myself..MUCH smaller. Same UBB tho. I edit out all language. The regular visitors have asked why. Reading the Terms of Service, states that no offensive, abusive, or profane language should be used. I believe in this, not because of it's legal acceptance when you click Agree, but because it's just a matter of respect. All the regulars have agreed to it, and respect me for keeping things wholesome and clean. They don't mind after i explain to them why. ZERO members complain about it. Hard to imagine? perhaps. but it's true.
Anyway, just my 2 cents on things. I wish the board would remain cleaner than it is. I really enjoy reading things here, but if it escalates to letting thru varations of the 7 dirty ones, i'll have to stop visiting, which i hope it never comes to.
thanks.

Although I think it was a "poking fun" type thing, one would think:
when a SpeedGuide moderator posts a link to a "mild cussing", F-word site...
when a SpeedGuide moderator starts a post with the "mild cussing", F-word...
when a SpeedGuide moderator believes raising ones voice through "mild cussing", using the F-word, is preferable to moderately reinforceing ones argument or point...
Then it's clear that, "mild cussing" is appropriate and sanctioned at SpeedGuide. That's fine with me.
You people are just so nice it makes me wanna puke. I guarantee you losers wouldn't say **** to anyone if you had to confront them face to face. It's easy to be someone your not when you have your monitor to hide behind. You pansies sound like little spoiled kids. Swearing doesn't offened anyone. You guys ever see In Living Color where Jim Carey is an adult still attached to his mother by the umbilical cord? That's the first thing that comes to my mind when I see this kind of bull****.

Okay, people have no right to free speech here. It is a private site on private servers on private property. First Amendment has nothing to do with this (or pretty much any website for that matter). I always have to preface with that so I don't hear the blah blah first amendment blah argument.
OTOH, where can I reasonably draw the line?
Is "dang" okay but "da**" not?
What about "heck" and "he**"?
Both to me, are expletives, however, since communication frequently involves expression of emotions, if someone thinks and writes the phrase:
"You're da** right there's no way in he** you'll be able to truly restrict people to an approved list of words!"
Then honestly, it loses some of the impact if I substitute the less offensive words. If it loses the impact, then I am no longer communicating both my thoughts and my emotions clearly. Which defeats the purpose of communicating at all.
OTOH, where the language is simply used to offend, degrade, or shock then it has no intrinsic value since they're not being used to communicate a depth of feeling, but rather to simply be offensive, degrading or shocking. At that point it should be moderated.
As I said before, I will try to keep an eye out for it, but I see my role more of a referree rather than a strict enforcement agent.
And no, we won't tolerate the use of the N word.

I think there is a culture that exists, and contains several species of humans from; White Trash, Ghetto Thugs, Hip=Hoppers, Rednecks, Uneducates whom can relate and express themselves with use of expletives. I dont have to use them but choose to use them, for the culture I am part of.
I have been called a potty mouth, and a "juvenille" but the fact remains, its who, and how I am... I supress my culture when in corporate enviornments, but once I am set away from that, the "relaxed" me unfolds, the bong comes out, and next thing you know.. I have offended some sheltered moron from Utah, because i said ANUS. I mean duh!
I think racism should be avoided at all costs though. Racism does not benefit man or society, only pulls them further apart..usually through aggression.
I got pissed when Bouncer flamed me for cursing, but I also understood I fuct up.
I hope ass this board grows, you allow people to say the things, they wanna say, and defend both sides in moderation.
Also, CAN WE STOP THIS UNCAPPING WAR???
Its a very flammable topic, and my expletives may get the best of me.

I agree, sometimes people are posting comments to a post while under the influence of Stress, Drugs, Alcohol, or just life itself. This can cause one to make a complete "A_S_S" of themselves. If only we lived in a perfect world! I think that the moderators of this forum have a "FULL-TIME" job watching over everything that comes across the board and deserve alot of credit for what they do. Some of us on this forum are a little over 20 years old and have been through more than we can take sometimes, and when we see something that makes us irritable we respond without realizing that we might be "OUT OF LINE" with our posts. Anyway, life goes on and we all figure out a way to get through it. As for the "A-Z" words, they are irrelevant; they mean no harm in most cases. As for "FREEDOM OF SPEECH", I feel that this site and many others would not be here if we were not allowed this right. The liability falls mostly on the person that agrees with the Forum rules when signing up. If you don't like what you see turn the channel, Dammit!

I agree with Brent mild cussing about a problem is fine. But as here lately I have seen a few who posted every other word as a cus word. Wich dose make it hard to help someone out. Rather makes you want to just tell them to go #### them selfs. Or as such one person who was just banded hear recently.
He is a example of a waste of time. Didn't really need help just wanted to screw around and make it bad for others. Who really need the help. If you are mad about something fine
cus a little is fine about a problem, But to use every other word that way dose not help.
Due to who can really understand you. It would be easier on everyone else if you explain your problem in a mature way. This my opinon! Some peoples might very. But I still can respect that to.
