Paid a buttload, but damn this thing is fast. Intel 820 chipset w/133 front side bus. 256 MB RDRAM. 64MB DDR NVIVIA geForce plus 4x AGP. 17" flat pannel display. 18GB SCSI ultra2/wide HD. 12x DVD, 8x4x32 CD-RW. Put in my own 3Com pci NIC.

Having lots of fun.

Did you get your comp from Dell? I saw them advertise their 1 gigahertz comp, and their specs are very similar to what you have

why? the 820 chipset and rambus are a waste of money

Why are they a waste of money? The memory operates about 100% faster than PC100. It is like having L2 cache. I think the money is worth it. I'll put this thing against anyones computer (x86 only) any day. All challengers will have to match my Sun machine. (Ultra80,quad processor,Workstation) :-)

I think your ass is lying....actually, im sure of it.

Well for one I'm sure you can find articles of why the i820 chipset is an eyesore for intel, and rambus is like 10x the cost for little actual gain (if you look at benchmarks out there). When DDR ram comes out in a couple months it will offer rambus performance for about the cost of SDRAM today.

Ahhh!!!! Back from a week on Maui!! (Eat yer heart out BMAN <snicker> )

Congrats to you BMAN... enjoy... You have earned crowing rights!!
You know, the difference between a 1GHz machine and a 850MHz is probably negligible since most of the other peripherals are similar in your average power user's box. To be honest since I need to upgrade myself... I'd probably spend the sheckels and get the GHz!!

Fixxer...
Why show a demo that stresses graphic accelerator prowess (Athlon 500MHz within 10% of the GHz)?? One of the main uses of my machine is non-linear video editing. Try finding an Adobe Premiere test compiling a 1GB avi edit. OK, maybe a little far-fetched. However Photoshop tests are much more common and are certainly more applicable.

Well that's my 2.3 yen

Ok fixxer, point made. I'll agree that the 820 is not the best thing to come out of the intel camp, but still an improvement.

dluv427: What makes you so all fired sure that I am lying? I AM NOT!

I mostly play games so I just posted that..

here's a line from anandtech's review:

For content creation applications and games (in most cases), the 1GHz Pentium III is faster than the 1GHz Athlon. Whether this is because specific SSE optimizations or because of the full speed on-die L2 cache of the Pentium III depends on the particular game and/or application, but for the most part the Pentium III will come out on top.

Things change once you enter the professional graphics arena, where the Athlon completely dominates provided that it is paired up with a KX133 motherboard.
