View Full Version : UDMA ribbon cable vs standard IDE? Is there such a thing?

I thought I had read somewhere that there is a difference between the standard IDE cable and one use for UDMA drives. Is there such a cable and is so what are the difference? LIke is there 80 wires but 40pins, so they look the same or what? Thanks in advance!

i've heard something to the effect of what Fixer is talking about, but wrt UDMA/33, the jury is still out for me.

i had to do a lot of digging to find out how to enable and optimise DMA for NT4. i did it with the normal 40-pin cables.

therefore, according to what i understand, 80-pin are not required for udma/33, but rather some other purpose (maybe special purpose mobos)

Actually you are right Fixxer, that is what I think I am talking about. I just wanted to make sure I was right. There is such a thing right? I believe you need to use a as you call "ATA 66" cable to get the drive to use bandwith of the 66mhz bus right? You can use a standard IDE cable but wont you only achieve regular hard drive speeds? I assume the extra 40 wires in the 80 wire total help you double the bandwith going to and from, but I am not full sure about this. PLease help me understand if I am right or wrong. Thanks again!! Like I said I am not fully sure.

As I understand it, The "extra wires" help eliminate cross-talk. At high speeds inductance can be a problem

So back to my original question is there a different cable to use for UDMA drives other than the standard IDE cable? Like we have talked about earlier in the post?

ATA/66 cables have an 80 pin layout to minimise crosstalk, which is the only way to move beyond ATA/33.
