View Full Version : a new machine

I've been toying with the idea of building another machine... What are some of the views on dual procs vs. AMD procs? Proc wise I'm going for the fastest AMD puts out, or dual 500 for Pentium/1ghz P3 (single if I go that route). Does anyone have any infor on the brand new All In Wonder? That's the vid card I was thinking about, any thoughts? Gonna go with a Plextor CDRW just cause I know they're pretty good. Most of my concerns are of the Proc and MB set up. I do some MM and engineering type dealies, AutoCad, Photoshop, Premiere, Orcad/Pspice, getting into 3d-gen. Gamewise, Driving type games, red alert, UT, Quake. OS- Win2k Pro, win98se. Hope this wasn't too long and help is appriciated, esp. about mb and proc http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

If you are still only toying with the idea, I would suggest you wait for the new AMD 760 Chipset with DDR RAM. Then get whatever T-bird you want, preferably the fastest out there. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif As for the mobo, both Abit and Asus are good, quality manufacturers. If you want to do it right now, get the KT7 A RAID. With the new VIA chipset, it gives you more expandability.

OCZ Monster 2 Heatsink
256mb PC133 Infineon 222

Aureal Vortex 2

BTW, the KT7a RAID is made by Abit.

Welcome to Speed Guide doctorfunk...

Depending on the amount of CAD work and graphic work that you do (and any other tasks that may benefit from dual CPUs), dual CPUs may be the best way to go. Remember, your OS and apps have to support dual CPUs before you will see any benefit.

Can't go wrong w/Plextor CD-Roms/burners.

As for the ATI Radeon AIW, if you plan on using the added video features, it's an excellent card. Although, an Asus GeForce 2 Deluxe is faster overall. However, the AIW will have better DVD playback and may have slightly better video out/in.

I've heard of some major problems with win2k pro and the AIW card maybe it was a bit dated but never hurts to ask. To use a dual proc sys to its full potential, my progs would actually have to support dualies? could I expect to see any diff just for the fact that I'm running 2k? Like I said, toying so it might be a bit down the road (like summer/fall 2001) maybe dual AMD by then? I know a lot could happen in that time... but info never hurts... I like the pricing of the AMD's and all the OCing success I've seen here and other forums... So maybe I'll steer that way with the fastest they put out... Thanks so far, keep it coming!!! http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif
