ok,so I got a new hard drive for xmas and put it in today,(WDC 20gig,7200rpm,ata100)now in the first boot page (ram count page)it says below the HD info[UDMA 66MHZ]is this what an ata100 drive speed is at ? I have an Intel VC820 MB with latest bios update.is there any settings or tweaks that I need to do to get the most out of this drive? and is there any way to test or see or benchmark the speed of this drive to make sure I am getting the ata100 benefits?I hope this makes sense!

You are not getting any ata100 benefits becuase your motherboard does not support ata100. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/frown.gif

unfortunately, the aforementioned post is true. ata/66 is not too bad, really. but the only way to get the full potential of your hdd you would need one of two things....
a) a PCI ata/100 host card. Promise makes a good card, and the last time i checked a basic ata/100 adapter was about $40. otherwise you are stuck at ata/66 performance figures.
b) a new mobo with an onboard ata/100 bus/controller. i dont know what your sys specs are and dont know if this is something you would want/need. ~$120 to ~$180 for whatever fatures you need now and/or in the future.
unless you have an extra $40 available for a PCI controller, or need/want the features of a new mobo for the needed cash, i would just stick with what you have (ata/66, right?...... thats rally not too bad as it is). you could take advantage of the high-end features of your nice x-mas present a bit down the road if you wish.

Just curious, how much perf increase do you get going from ATA33 - ATA66?

lol current FAST HDs can only substain around 40MB/sec so you WON'T notice a difference between ATA66 or 100! ATA100 sux more cuz it uses up more CPU time. Read this: http://www.bxboards.com/faq.shtml#35

You probably won't notice a difference between ATA66 and ATA100.

most large computer retailers will stock them (both online and real).
i like www.aberdeeninc.com (http://www.aberdeeninc.com) look under the "controllers" section. a lot of what they have are SCSI hosts, but they also have ATA controllers. they are listed by manufacturer..... look for the mfgr Promise. thats what they are really known for (for the most part, anyways).
glc and tiger are right. you would only see serious gains in your burst speeds rather than sequential reads. its something worth mention, but it will most likely not be a night/day difference. if you are a performance nut, then you know where to start http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif . you dont have to go with aberdeen...... i have used then before and have been pleased with their service. they are also local to me, which is nice.
