looking for some recomendations on a new motherboard and CPU. Will be getting AMD chip. I don't want any onboard periphereals, and want to spend around $250. moderate gaming machine and internet. What is the difference between and Athlon and an Athlon Thunderbird? Is a Duron a good way to go? whats the drawback to a Duron, Slot vs. Socket. Just a couple of questions http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

For 250 I would get a SOCKET T-bird 750 and an Abit KT7 RAID. You could o/c this to at least 1000 and there is a good chance of even 1100. Slot Athlons have more cache but not on die, so its not as fast a a socket T-Bird. In this case the slot athlon has I believe 512 L2 OFF-die cache, While the T-bird has 256 ON-die cache. The T-bird ends up being better. The Duron is just like a T-bird, except it has 64k ON-die L2 cache. Therefore the T-bird performs a bit better. There, I'm done http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

Duron 600 @ 1000mhz
OCZ Monster 2 Heatsink

Also, if you want to skimp a bit and go with a 600 duron, you could probably bring your cost down to 200 or less leaving more money for a different upgrade, say a new vid card. Just an idea http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif
