I re-formated and now the Plextor drive is "some-what" installed. I can see it in the device manager but I can't see it in My Computer. I get an Adaptec DirectCD error on my taskbar that says the CD-R/RW isn't support by Adaptec DirectCD. What's wrong here? I downloaded the latest drivers from Adaptec and Plextor says they don't support drivers for Win 95/98. I feel I'm sooooo close if only someone could get me the rest of the way. Thanks for your help.

have you considered going back to 98SE or perhaps W2K?

I had it working before. Then I used go-back and reinstalled the drivers with the CD-RW in the slot. I have it set as Slave and the DVD-ROM set as Cable Select, does this have to do with anything?

The device Manager has the PLextor as a standard CD-ROM device. Is there anything that I can download (driver for instance) to get this thing running again? Once again, I have the CD-RW set as slave and the DVD-ROM set as cable select. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thanks

why do you have the DVD set as cable select?
that is not used much anymore-
http://www.firmware.com/support/bios/cablesel.htm

Try your CDRW as master, alone on its own channel, to see if you can get it to work.

I tried to just run the CD-RW by itself and now it says I have no CD-ROM drive in My Computer. I'm really stuck on what to do here. THink the drive is faulty? I don't know how that could be since I used it before and it worked fine. Thanks

I installed it on my other machin (win2k)and it worked. I don't get it. It's like it works after I format or install on a new system. Anyone have any ideas??? I now have the CD-RW set to Slave and the DVD-ROM set to Master (same config in the Win2k machine). If you have any ideas, lemme know, thanks in advance.

fubarman, didn't you post in another thread that you have an ATA 100 card? If so, you should have 2 IDE channels on the motherboard, and another 2 on the card. Why slave anything if you don't have too?

Go ahead and try as bug suggested earlier in this thread.

Maybe that might clear things up for you. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I try to do that but my system doesn't boot. It crashes and shuts down. I can't get into windows. Is there a setting in the BIOS that could help this. I already have the IDE config to "Both" so it recognizes the ATA 100 Controller and the MOBO IDE ports. Hope this helps . . . thanks for the suggestions guys http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I just enabled the Controoler in Device Manager to boot both IDE channels but the system still crashes. I even tried to set the drive to cable select but it didn't work ( and I originally set it as master). I'm experimenting but it's getting pretty annoying. I thank you for your help though.

I just called Gateway and they said they can't help me cause I didn't purchase it directly through them. I bought it at the damn Gateway Accessory Store. Why the **** isn't that concidered Gateway????? I just wanted to know if my Ultra ATA 100 card was working properly. It had nothing to do with installing the CD-RW, some people are just arsholes. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/mad.gif

Plextor emailed me and said to install standard drivers for my Ultra ATA 100 card. I still have the same problem. They also said to enable DMA in the Device Manager for the card, how do I do this???

I looked in the Device Manager and I saw that my IDE controller is in the SCSI adapter pull down menu. It's says it's an IDE controller but it's in the SCSI menu. I try to update the driver bu the people who manufacture it (Promise) are not listed in the manufactures list. All the drives there are SCSI and I know I don't have a SCSI adapter. I think this is my problem here. I just need to know how to solve it.

I fixed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! All I did was go to the Device Manager and delete anything that had to do with Hard Disk controllers and my DVD-ROM drive. I shutdown and plugged my CD-RW in as a slave to the DVD-ROM (I gave up with the Ultra ATA 100 maseter idea). I rebooted and wah lah . . . there was now an E drive in my computer. I was on the phone for two hours with a Gateway Tech, and he couldn't figure it out. It's amazied what you can do when you don't give a damn anymore, the answer just pops up. HEHE, http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif , I wanna thank eveone who posted and hope this can help someone else some day.

Actually plextor recommends setting the cdrw as master and the dvd as slave if you want all 12 x's of speed when burning. Just an FYI.

it would seem that there was nothing wrong with your system at all, just a windows configuration glitch.

the culprit here would appear to be that prog 'go-back', which in essence configured your PC to *go back* to having no CDRW....heh!
