View Full Version : OC Core 2 Duo & RAM question

My current setup is an ASUS P5LD2 motherboard (945P chipset, 1066/800/533FSB, supports 4GB 667/533/400 DDR2) with a P4 OC'ed to 3.8 GHz (engineering sample from a friend) and 1GB 533 value ram.

I'm thinking about upgrading to Core 2 Duo (maybe 6420?) and overclocking, but I'm not sure if I'd even get a substantial performance boost (main use of computer is gaming and mp3 management).

I'd also be upgrading to an 8800GTS for gaming (big upgrade for me there).

Is it worth upgrading to a new MB (mine isn't Core2 compatible - argh), processor, and video card? Or should I just get a new video card now and wait until quad cores have been out for a while to upgrade the mb/processor?

Thanks for your help :thumb: - I've been out of the OC loop since before the Core 2 was released.

Before upgrading to a Core 2 I had a Pentium D 915 @ 3.9GHz. The speed difference between that and my E6600 at the 3.6 to 3.8 I keep it as is huge.

That said, the Q6600 is going to hit $266 on July 22nd from what I read, which is when I would upgrade. The P5B series from Asus is a good motherbard at a good price, and it's also quad-core compatible.

One note is current games would probably run better on a Core 2 overclocked than a Core 2 Quad, mainly because 90% of games don't have multiple-core support, and none come to mind that support quad cores. Also, the dual cores overclock better than the quads.

This is your board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813131538 ?

If so it does support the core 2 duos. Unless you have an older version, or you may just need a bios update.

Unfortunately my board is version 1 and won't support core 2. My initial hope was that I could just put the new processor in my old board with my zalman cooler and call it good.

Read up some more about price drops- dual core is supposed to drop in price again in September so I'll probably wait until then. I'm in no big hurry, but I think I might spring for the video card soon.

Thanks for your help guys!
