View Full Version : Java not working (sometimes)

I'm connecting with an adsl line. I began to get curious about my connection speed, and so surfed over to a few web-based speed tests. Only one will work - http://www.computingcentral.com/topics/bandwidth/speedtest50.asp

The rest don't come up, and it seems to be because my browser's java is not working.

btw, I have never had a problem failing to load or use a site before (not that I noticed anyway)

I was using ie 5.0, I upgraded to 5.5 - no help. I tried ns 4.6, no help; ns 6pr - it said it needed to load a java plugin, which I did. Now when I go to restart the browser I get a windows error stating that the program has performed an illegal operation and will be closed. This before that damn thing even opens.

in ie I have java console enabled, jit compiler for virtual machine enabled, and java logging NOT enabled.

anyone know why I am having java problems? do I simply need to download a new plugin? wouldn't that have been included with i.e 5.5?

a newbie says thanks

sol,

I recently had the same problem you are having. I had just installed W/ME on four different machines. One of them (my main connection to the net naturally) had the java go bad.

I did about everything I could think of Repairing/Reinstalling IE5.5, trying to upgrade from Microsoft, system restore,etc.,etc.,etc. nothing worked.

Finally I just reinstalled ME (no format just reinstalled it over top)and this finally fixed the Java problem......

Good luck

To steal some schtick from Chris Jericho - Never, EEEEEEEEEEVER install an OS on top of itself a-gane! Seriously, you can really screw some stuff up. Sol, try this - go to add/remove programs and select IE 5.5. Hit add/remove and select 'Repair' from the pop-up menu. This will repair any damaged files that you may have with regards to IE. If that still does not work, make sure you have all proxy servers disabled.

If all else fails - and you DO decide to re-load - make sure you format first.

I tried the repair - seemed like it did something, but it didn't solve the problem.

about proxy servers, I don't even really know what they are or how to control them. I went into IE, then internet tool/connections/settings and made sure that "use proxy service" was NOT checked.

still no java.

anymore ideas?

Thanks for the info. I know it is not such a good idea, but sometimes if your are having unfixable problems it is a good thing to try before doing a full format and reinstall.

I have seen it work several times, and sometimes not change a thing !!!
