View Full Version : 8600GTS, meh!

I got an XFX 8600GTS a few weeks ago, one that's factory overclocked. The only game I play it World of Warcraft, and with all in-game settings maxed (I leave "application-controlled" in the NVIDIA control panel) at 1680x1050, it played perfectly...until I got my character into the expansion world. Now, it chokes at the same settings, either with vsync on or off. I've had to downgrade the AA and some other settings to get it to be what I consider smooth and playable. Changing drivers didn't do much.

I RMA'd it the other day because the fan is loud as ****, so hopefully it comes back quieter.

Unless you're on a really tight budget, I'd pay a little more and get the 8800GTS. I feel like I made a big mistake.

Where is this "expansion world" in WoW ?

Thanks

Outland, the Burning Crusade expansion world.

ahh, are you required to have a high level character to play the burning crusade expansion?

No, you can actually get summoned to Outland at any level. You'll aggro everything in the zone, probabl, but you can experience it. Better if you were level 58 or higher, though, so you can run around to the different zones.

I want to add it to our suite since apparently as you are indicating it is more demanding graphically than the original game.

The graphics are still the cartoony type, but the textures are far more detailed (at least to my eyes), plus the sky is an active animation and the zones like Zangarmarsh are very detailed, full screen glow effect makes them stand out and hinders performance in my experience.

This tells me its the games problem not the card. But for ****s and giggles make sure your running the latest and greatest Nvidia Driver for that card...might check around for beta's out as well as most beta's perform better than WHQL's sometimes. Also make sure your DirectX is updated as there was a update for April.

This tells me its the games problem not the card. Or its just normal becasue the card cant handle the extra detailed textures and because of the active sky animation.

I think the combination of higher res textures, resolution he's running at and FSAA are too much for the amount of ram the card has (256MB, I'm assuming).

Just got an e-mail from XFX support. Their inspection results were:

"FAILED - Visual Check(Whining Capacitor)"

So it wasn't the fan, but a capacitor. It was horribly loud, and the email says the action will be a "credit." Not sure if that means giving me my money back or a brand new card.

Brent

Sounds like a new card.

Yeah, capacitors can do that sometimes.

I might just end up selling it for a slight loss and buying an 8800GTS, although the 640 MB job is out of my price range. Not sure if the 320 MB would be enough to run 1680x1050 at max settings, though...which is what I want to do.

perhaps but this card is built pretty damn good over its counterparts vs how the 7 series and I've not heard from anyone that is playing WOW with 7series cards ever say they are having problems even with everything maxed out.

Just suggestions none the less about drivers and so on.

Well the reason 7 series owners arent complaining is cuz the 7900GS gets a little better than 8600GTS results and the 7950GT Seems to destroy it, for WoW at least. But I'm sure in many other things since the 8600s seem to jsut be a waste, expensive as a budget gaming card yet with the performance of a non gaming card.

yeah I think the biggest increase you get is DX10 ability..but yeah 7950..I can see why it would "destroy" it lol it only has over 700more megs of ram in it :D

7950GT - 512 MB RAM
MINUS
8600GTS - 256 MB RAM
EQUALS
More than 700?

Come back when your not high. DX10 on a 8600 will do little good as its not a decent performer.

Well thats closer, but still 512 - 256 = 256, so its over 200 but not 300.

but your only off by 44 this time so thats a MAJOR improvement. :)

Well, I am still waiting on my replacement card. I've spoken to XFX support and they assure me the replacement will "ship very soon", but it's been a month. A 7300LE sucks for playing games.

Get ready for this one, then...

I received a new reply on the ticket today, verbatim:

[DANIEL_E - 06/14/2007] Hi Burke, I have forwarded your information off to our rma department to find out exactly what`s going on. I believe the current situation is the 8600gts is in high demand, and I beleive we`re out of stock at the moment. We appologize for the delay. I have our rma department looking into this and we should have an eta on stock soon. Daniel

LOL, believe me, I'll be getting a better card as compensation if they really are out of stock and can't get me the replacement STAT.

That's messed up man. I'd be absolutely livid and on the phone with them until someone there put a new card in the mail.

Wow.

I've politely asked if I could get a faster card as a replacement, or if I could pay a NOMINAL fee to upgrade to a card they do have in stock. Heh. We'll see.

RMAs just don't inspire confidence. I'm still waiting on my $50 rebate from Iomega from the zip drive I bought in 1996.

I'll consider myself lucky that all my RMA's have gone smoothly. I just RMA'd an X2 4400 I bought almost 2 years ago....turn around time was about 2 weeks.

What is this world of warcraft you speak about? Is this the same WoW that millions of poor souls are addicted to and have to pay a monthly fee while they play about 22 hours every day.

LOL gotta play some CS man! :D

Nah, but seriously.. I hope your problems are resolved.

According to the XFX rep, they'd be willing to offer an upgrade to an 8800GTS 320 MB for $150.00. LOL, the difference in price from what i paid would only be $60, eff that. They're supposed to get a new shipment of 8600GTS this week, so I will FINALLY get my card back (they'll probably ship it parcel post with my luck).

It's only been about two months since I first submitted the ticket. XFX won't be getting any more of my business.

The replacement card showed up this morning.

The original card was an 8600GTS factory overclocked to 720 MHz core, but the model they sent me was the 730 MHz core, not a huge jump but a decent enough gesture.

I just hope it isn't ear-bleedingly loud when I install it when I get home.
