Like 3 days ago, my pc had a horrible time loading websites and downloading anything, seemed slower than dial-up, when i tired to d/l tcp optimizer it took about 15 minutes to get to 8% and then froze. Is there anyway an onboard NIC can just slowly die or die completely without any warning? It's some VIA Rhine II Ethernet Adapter with driver from 3/7/2007 or something. When i took my old D-Link DE-528 Ethernet PCI adapter (which is discontinued support yada yada), and replaced it in place of my dial-up modem, cause i dont have a more than 3 PCI slots (old mobo), pages loaded fast as they used to and downloads are really fast again.

Is there any combo cards with phone line n ethernet port so i can have modem n ethernet in 1 card?

PS, i should have checked that first  , cause i went through all this crap usin Winsock and TCPoptimizer and changed a whole bunch of crap, took forever and it did nothing good :(

BTW, im not sure if they call an onboard ethernet port a NIC, i just couldnt think of anything else 2 call it atm

Also, is it safe/ok to use this D-Link card until i get a replacement, just so there is internet access for my bro to play GW or what other crap he plays, or is this gonna screwup something bigtime? Any1 know if this card is decent for online gaming? for now, cause im just gonna hear a bunch of crap if he cant play crap

Yup..any type of NIC, onboard, PCI, ISA, USB, can just die. More commonly..when they die..it's total failure..like a constant red X on the connection when plugged in, or just totally disappears from Device Mangler, or locks up the system. Sometimes though..you can get very flakey performance.

my on board nic died like 2 weeks ago,

mt usb ports died, then a month later my onboard nic kept loking up, then saying it was disconnected once a day, then eventually never showed connection, installed a pci and havnt had an issue yet with the network

Damn, mine either connected and lose connection like every 3 mins and some times it would just come up, limited or no connectivity.

So are there any cheap NIC cards and what should i do about his dial-up modem that i took out for the PCI slot for that D-Link card? Cause i think he used the modem for faxin from his printer.

I wonder if anything else is gonna go on him.

usb nic or usb modem,

i think for standard internet and household file and printer sharing, pretty much any nic will do, but im sure YoS or YOSc will have a better idea for nics

Linksys, 3com(3COM!!!! *raises hand in a powerful way imitating 300*), Intel

Linksys will be the cheapest, 3com the most expensive because they stopped making the 905s.

Linux was made with the code of jesus christ, it can heal NICs.

I'll put my Jewel clone on it tomorrow and let you know. http://members.speedguide.net/cabledude/shiftyeyes.gif

I'll like to call them NIP because once it is onboard it is no longer a card. :p

What about Network Interface Controller? :p

I guess that makes sense, but it is always more fun to use different terminology than everyone eles.

as in

"Hey could u plz plug this rj11+34 jack into the nip."

3COM and Intel are my two faves! The top 2x!
Netgear, although I don't like their routers, actually made some very good performing NICs.
Onboard nForce are excellent
Linksys, although I do like their routers, I actually don't like their NICs.

my onboard nic died a couple of weeks ago too, and it was the same chipset.

Got a USB linksys nic. so far so good, works like a charm

Oh and gigabyte NIC's are really good too
