I started looking into a system for a friend, he would like it close to $1000
I took Dunsters model to start with but he needs an OS Case and PSU too. So I hit 1400 pretty quick.
Things it needs to have:
Core 2 Duo(most likey a 6600) - $313
8800GTS(less the lower end cards come out in april) $279
XP - $150
DVD burner - $30
So right there I'm at like 750
Still need board/memory that works well with board/PSU/Case
If I could find some cases that come with a decent enough PSU for the system that would help alot. Nothing crazy, plain, probably preferably a black case.
And then I guess a P965 chipset mobo, he wont do SLI and from [H] forum I guess thats all the 650i or 680i would offer more of. But how cheap can I go on the board before its too cheap?

Looking at 2GB gskill for $154
Biostar Tforce P965
added 320gig seagate HDD $90
XP $140
Brings me to $1118, still short Case and PSU.
I can drop $90 if I lower him to a 6400 and then thats $1028, still short case and PSU.
meh stick to a name brand chipset and you'll be fine for the mobo.. i SUGGEST sticking w/a decent brand too -- 100 buck board should be reasonably easy to find. ram, 100 bucks will get u 2GB, check hard forum deals..few of em there. Dunno bout the case, i found a TT for about 90 bucks at clubit -- i like it. psu i spent a lot on.. like 250 for a 850w..but u can get a reasonable psu for 60-70 prolly
Not the fastest stuff, will save u 44 bucks tho (ram)

free shipping when u pay w/ paypal and use code PAYPAL10
this is fine -- again not the biggest fan of msi mobos, but it'll be fine

(i just bought a 8800gtx from them, it's given me no headaches)
cheap decent case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811133145
enough psu for what he needs
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023
21 bucks after rebate, i think it's a rebadged top power, like everything else (i have the tt 850w -- runs great)
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231098) $129.99
MSI P6N SLI-FI nForce 650i (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130082) $112.99
I'm out of money.

Not sure about the A-data or the MSI Neo F board. Jmicron controller, not the most positive user reviews lol
But dropping to the cheaper Gskill there that I didnt see before plus the 6400C2D, that would save $115.
TT PSU only has 1 rail of 18A? I dunno about its efficiency either
found this I like:

Even though I just had an enermax die on me.

His target is $1000. $300 for RAM is retarded.
Stop buying stuff and reselling it within a week.

Ya, the Adata ram might be possible, think I'll avoid the mobo and PSU though.

You'd be better off getting a 6300 or 6400 and taking the savings over a 6600 and putting it into better parts elsewhere.

Nvidia 650i ... P5N-e ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131142 (SLI if it matters)
Intel P965 ... P965 ... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131030
Same caliber board, different brand chipsets. Same price. Just brand preference.
Biostar = ****. Friend got it despite my advice. First arrived DOA. Second flopped on a bios update.

Ya the open box P5B interests me, its 80 something bucks only
I expected Biostar hate here, seems they send a few DOAs out, a few more than other makers, but reviews are good for them too.
I could say the same for ASUS, first 2 asus boards I bought were DOA.
If I'm gonna get him to hit the 120 range for boards the Gigabyte DS3 will most liekly win out.
