View Full Version : Thoughts on the 8800GTS line?
So I'm looking to get a new vid card (in addition to a bunch of other things).
I was originally going to get a 7950GT, but I've decided to at least step up to the 8800 GTS line. I'm looking at the XFX 8800 GTS (http://www.newegg.com/product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814150172). Any others I should look at? I'd like to stay under or at the $300 mark.
Everything I've read through seems to make these cards sound pretty good. I'll likely be overclocking the card. The system is getting overclocked as well.
FWIW, here's the rest of the system:
BFG 680i motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16813189003
Intel 6300 Core 2 Duo
2GB Geil DDR2 800 RAM - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820144062
ThermalTake 700W PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817153039
CoolerMaster Mystique case - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16811119117
Lite-On 20X DVD writer (really would like SATA) - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827106055
Lite-On DVD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16827106039
Samsung 226BW 22" LCD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16824001096
I think that's all.....
I have one and love it ...well worth it.....you won't be disappointed.

XFX? Or another?
So far the 8800GTS seems to be the best deal. I don't upgrade all that often so I'd like something that lasts.

8800GTS sounds good to me. XFX is a good brand.
Don't even bother with the old, 79xx generation. The 8xxx series is where it's at.

be aware that April 17th is going to be a big release of more 8series cards cheaper and almost just as good as the GTS since the GTS is only a water down version of the GTX and worthless IMO.

GTS maybe a little watered down, but its definately more affordable.
Got any details on the release?

Looking at your RAM, Gskill at the same price has a more popularly used chip, ProMOS, also OCZ and others use it as well.

Nice list. Hm. Maybe I'll try g.skill out. I've not had any experience with them.

For the current price its a deal.
The r600's are going to slaughter them. mainly with memory bandwidth. The 8900 series is going to follow and basically be a 8800 + extra memory badwidth to compete.
There is nothing the 680 board will do that a $130 650i or 965p won't do.
For overclocking get some better memory or stick with that memory and up it to the 6400. That is assuming your are going for peak clock.

The memory is 6400 (DDR2 800 = PC2 6400). I did just change my choice to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231114
At least for now.... ;) Every time I get ready to hit checkout I change my damn mind.

yeah only plextor and its a huge price increase, not worth it.
Welp it's done! I finally convinced myself to hit the Submit button. Should be here Wednesday.:thumb:
This should help with my folding stats. 2 of my folders have been down for several weeks now. I'll be getting this one up and another (P4 3.06). Then I just need to come across an inexpensive PSU for my 2.4Ghz box.

I'm just saying that the e6300 can hit stable over 450 at which your ram would have to run stable at 50mhz over stock. Easier just to get some ddr2-1000 and be done with it.

Yeah. But there's a decent jump in cost from DDR2-800 to DDR2-1000. I may pick some up later, but for now I think I'm ok.
Man I hate waiting.
