How to delete a stubborn cookie

In Windows cookies, I have an Index.dat cookie. It shows as zipped. When I try to unzip it says it doesn't appear to be a valid archive. I cannot delete it, open it, nor move it. Don't have a clue where it came from, however I guess it was D/L'ed with some programs. My 'puter was infested w/ spies, and I'm trying to give it an enema by deleting everything that I can before I reformat.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA

This is what I do with Index.dat: I open it with Word or any other Word Procesor and I delete all of the text that is inside of it and then I save it. Reboot in MS-DOS

Run the: «deltree cookies» command.

The cookies folder & all its contents (including index.dat) will be delated. They will be recreated upon reboot.

However, the index.dat will be a fraction of the size, that it was.

In the Temporary Internet Files folder in another index.dat file. It is MUCH larger that the cookies index.dat

In MS-DOS, run the deltree tempor~1 command...same as above happends.

If your gonna format the drive then download from your hard drive manufacture a drive zeroing program. It will put "0" in every sector and cluster on the drive. Garanteed there will be nothing there after that.

A FORMAT drive: /U does it.

This performs an unconditional format, which destroys every byte of data on ANY hard disk/floppy by overwriting it with hex F6h.

But this was made possible with the help of SeedOfChaos and a 4 hour phone conversation.
