Win 98 not Stable

I have Windows 98 and it consistently crashes on me. I am really getting pissed off. My parents won't buy me Win 2000 and that really sux. . . I'm not exactly rich myself, I can't even afford WinME. Is there any tweak or program that increases reliability? I could sure use it. . . thanks.

Usually crashes the most in Counterstrike(half-life mod)

format the thing and install Win98 freshly clean on it

and then install all the latest official whql drivers

that's the best way, seriously...

Or reinstall your game , that could be the problem. Or as Brent said reformat and reinstall windows. I run win 98 and it runs great.

Basic rundown:

Win 98 is a fairly stable OS until poorly written software is installed that overwrites existing windows system .dll's, causing the programs the rely upon the older version .dll's to misfunction. Then you begin to see messages like explorer has caused an invalid page fault in blah blah" or "this prog has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down" etc etc.

Most of those error messages are not really windows fault. They stem from "how windows handles the goofy system files" that have ben corrupted by lazy programmers.


Unfortunately, even MS programmers are guilty of this too. Witness the bugs in IE when first released publically. Or thgeir office products.

Best bet is to nuke the HD & stick in the win cd.....

I have to agree about the poorly written software! You guys remember when a 20 mb hard drive cost $300.00 and you only had 640k of ram? Ahh the good ole days...When programers optimize there code.

Have you tried clearing the startup menu? Before an os reinstall clear it out and then run SFC. I find that most crashes are because of something running in the back ground. Clear it out and see if that fixes it first.
