Depends what your using to define "the best".

Uptime?
Max speed for downloading?
Max speed for uploading?
Customer service?
Freedom to run applications from your home, public services? Or do they blocK?
Pricing..."bang for the buck"
How good their e-mail is...spam/virus removal before mail makes it to your mailbox?

well i play a few games and download a bit, so the best for me would be one with high bandwidth and unlimited usage, with a reliable connection. any suggestions??

It all depends where you live and what those companies offer. Best advice would be to ask around your area. Any such local forums where you could ask such a question?

Gotta be Blueyonder from Telewest/Virgin Media

20Mb down :D but only 768Kb up:( hey it`s better than it used to be!

Uptime - pretty much 24x7x365, only been down about 3 times in the last 5 years for about 3-5 minutes each, I think that`s pretty good going

Max speed for downloading - Dunno yet...Supposed to be 20Mb but I`m still waiting for my new Modem (I still get about 1.2MB/sec on my Motorola SB4100)

Max speed for uploading - See above.... Suppose a good 70-80KB/sec is OK!:D

Customer Service - again, see above, not really needed to contact them untill requesting my new modem! When I have though, service seemed pretty good.

Freedom to run applications from your home, public services? Or do they block - Well, bit of a story there... I got my IPCop running and wanted to play with the external access, set it up on port xxx and it wouldn`t work, plain and simple, mate of mine was using Smooth wall (on a different port and his did work) I called them up and they assured me they didn`t block any ports at all! weeks went by with my mate on the other end testing this and that...in the end I changed my access to port xxxx and it worked. Read into that what you will!

Pricing - Pretty damn good! all the other ADSL providers offering UP TO 24Mb and MAYBE only getting 2Mb IF YOU`RE LUCKY!! Virgin Media/Telewest are our only cable people as far as I know!

How good their e-mail is - Dunno, don`t use it, the interface is utter crap!! they offer upto 5 x 30Mb mailboxes though, but their email is crap...did I mention that!?!?!

Overall, I`d say 9.5 outta 10 and the only reason it`s not 10 is Mr `no, we don`t block any ports` and he was!! The tit!

Hope this is of some use!

well one of the worst phone / service providers has to be BT .. 32 years of experience nothing but hassle., poor speed, unreliable connection, over priced.

for Now.................... Vodafone has come up troops, sofar 6 months of solid performance, faster and cheaper than BT..
