ok, so I picked up GoW yesterday, and my son and I went through the campaign in co-op split screen for about 2 hours last night...

if you own a 360 - you must get this game! remember all the hype about "next-gen" gaming? well this is what they were talking about ... honestly it makes everything that has come out for the 360 pale in comparison ... the graphics (even on our standard t.v. - we don't have a high def. set yet) and the sound are just beyond anything out right now.

guys, I've played alot of games - nearly every shooter that has come out since the original DooM, and this is imho the best one I've ever played! I used to believe that a shooter couldn't be done as well for a console as a PC, but this game has proven me wrong ...

ok ... enough "fanboy" rant - let's talk about gameplay ...

If you are one of those "run & gun" types (like me), that likes to go in guns blazing and wipe out everything - you will die - often. This game places a heavy emphasis on staying under cover - but that's not a bad thing and takes nothing away from the experience at all. I'm not a fan of "cover" games, but I slipped right in w/ no problem.
And the bad guys stay under cover too ... their tactics are almost as good as your squad ... and they are very even with you - ie; it takes quite a few bullets to drop these guys - probably as many shots as it takes for you to die, but again, I think that adds to the realism ... and honestly, your pulse will quicken when it looks like you're about to be overrun (hmmm - a healthy dose of "survival horror - LOL).

The controls are alot better than I thought they would be ... it took me 5 minutes to feel very comfortable with them - by the time you get through the training stage you'll be fine.

The cut scenes are incredible - it makes you feel like you're in a movie or something ... oh and speaking of camera ... when you do a crouch run (sprint), the camera drops behind you and it's like someone is chasing you with a hand-held - reminded me alot of the movie Black Hawk Down ... this is just another thing that adds to the coolness ...

Weapons we've come across so far -
Machine Gun w/ a chainsaw bayonet - 'nuff said :thumb:
Pistol - useless.
Shotgun - :thumb: great for close range - if you can get close to one of the bad guys w/o dying.
Locust Gun (I forget the exact name) - not bad, but it ain't the machine gun - actually, when I was picking up the Hammer, I dropped my machine gun and picked this one up by mistake, and now I can't find another machine gun
Hammer Of Dawn: a targeting laser - you target something and it gets frickin' fried by an orbiting satellite :D (think Ion Painter from UT)

Nothing I can type can give you a feel for the immersion you will experience with this game ... I haven't found one thing I don't like about it ...

oh yeah - you know in co-op modes on other games how basically the two of you are just carbon copies of each other? not in GoW ... your teammate (Dane) would be there even if you were playing alone - he would just be A.I.
We thought that was pretty cool :thumb: The co-op factor is fully integrated into the storyline and doesn't feel "bolted-on" at all. We're playing on "Hardcore" and I don't think either of us could get through it by ourselves ...

Like I said - if you own a 360 - you need this game :thumb:

If yall think of anything you want to know, please ask - I'm sure I haven't even scratched the surface, but I wanted to get something up asap for the folks who haven't gotten this baby yet :)

That sounds very nice! I think I may be forced to by an Xbox for titles like this.

I've read some reviews that say this title alone is worth buying a 360 for ....

... dunno if I'd drop that much $$$ to play one game - I'm just glad we have one :thumb:

It has its problems but is a solid 9/10 game. Probobly 9.5/10, it is NOT perfect. The controls sometimes screwed me up online, would toss me to a wall when i was running and such.

Also play campaign and kill the first SEEDER with the laser thing, go back to the room where you had to fend off the things that crawl on the ceiling, go all the way to the rocks down at the far end, you can walk straight threw them into another room, becareful becuase you can get stuck, just be sure to have some frags for suicide if you get stuck.....needed more polishing i think. THere is no reason to ever go back there so they shoulda blocked the door off somehow! :(

I have only one complain, when we were playing deathmatch i felt into some green swamp and i drowned. And i was in warehouse no water what so ever.
Yes the controls are little bit difficult but its because we have to take cover as much as possible and sometimes you get stuck and before you hit A again you are dead especialy when somebody is running behind you with chain saw lol
Oh and i hate playing Aliens in this game, they have so big heads grrrrr.
This game is getting 9.9 points from me.

Awesome frikkin game.
The co-op intergration is so well done. I was playing it at about 2am saturday night, down in the mines, stuck at the the Corpser, had died about 20 times.
Well I see that my friend had just signed into Xbox Live so I sent him an invite. 30 seconds later, he pops into the game as Dom and tells me he is about to head to bed. I told him I just needed help with the Corsper so he helps me beat him (took about 10 minutes) and then logs off and I continue on my merry way.
It was so seamless, I can't imagine any new games that wouldn't do it that way.
This game rocks!

Looks like theres potential for a PC port for this game after directx10 is released.

And this is exactly the reason why I/O's Kane & Lynch needs to add online co-op to be anything above a AA title.

I'm there, cant get through corpser, he backed up 2 times and then wretches showed up, they always kill me ****.
I'm shooting him into belly because its his weak spot but i died many times.I'm stuck there.
Yes this game rocks, you should see us when we play online, freaking massacre.

when the wretches show up concentrate on them, eventually you kill them all and they stop coming and you can concentrate on the corpser again.
Shooting him in the belly causes him to expose his vulnerable area ;)

But the belly is the only one vulnerable area isnt it ?

Shooting the belly opens up his mouth, shooting him up there should push him back.

When he's at the rear of the stage, shoot out the two metal grid clips (or whatever the hell they are). If you can't do it with the wretches bouncing around, do as Blisster says, as they'll eventually stop spawning.

You guys should read this thread as it really dives into the heart of the game. I think by reading this you'll all learn something from it, be it a new bug or a good tactic.

Here is a snippet of part of the discussion so far:

Gears of War Impressions: Day One

Tonight, I received my copy of Gears of War at around 5 PM EST, and played multiplayer for about three hours. Participating in the bulk of games I played was Tyler07, and my team mate Excal. Getting straight into the mechanics of the game, from my time spent with the game - it delivers, and basically behaves as I speculated and described previously in my blogs. The movements are seamless. The game does have a learning curve of about 30 minutes to an hour, so you shouldn't expect to simply pick it up immediately and have a feel for it. You may find yourself cover slipping instead of mantling over cover or the like, but this is user error (in my case, as I was just warming up with the controls). Personally, it took me about 35 minutes to get everything tight - slamming against cover, cover slipping, rolling, etc, etc. However, once you get everything down, it feels wholly natural. The roadie run, the first time I used it, felt awkward and difficult to control, but after 5 or 10 minutes, things fell in place as you get used to controlling the direction your player moves in.

I just wanted to note that if you play this game expecting it to be Halo-esque in gameplay, or similar in mechanics, you're in for a rude awakening. It's an entirely different game with entirely different mechanics - however, an open mind will allow you to appreciate both for what they offer, and it's a great deal from both titles.

From my experiences tonight, the multiplayer is very rewarding and the matches are exciting, and should prove even more exciting when watching top teams play. The gameplay is fast and chaotic, but not chaotic to the point where you can't keep up with the action - it's very easy to follow things. Several times, there were some very clutch moments in gameplay, whether it be headshots or triple kills. Having a team mate lay down suppressing fire on Canals as you slam and mantle into and over cover on your way to get a kill is a satisfying feeling and really would make for some exciting matches. Auto-aim is very subtle, if present at all. This doesn't lead to clunky gameplay however, as things flow smoothly all the way through. Without a doubt, this game rewards those with superior hand-eye coordination - especially snipers. The Torquebow takes a considerable amount of skill to tag someone with the explosive arrow consistently, and I was able to land a few myself tonight.

However, I did run across a major beef with the game that the competitive community has to make clear to Epic, and that's the inability to choose starting weapons. The Lancer remains quite random in gameplay, as I stated in my piece about the HoD and the Lancer Rifle being unsuitable for competitive play. I honestly didn't have enough time with the HoD to determine, roughly, whether or not its suitable for competitive play. The Lancer Rifle, while random, should only see a few situations at high levels of play where the chainsaw is used. Backtracking for a moment, the inability to choose starting weapons makes it somewhat difficult to test for balance, assuming the person playtesting really feels the Lancer is not suitable for competitive play.

Tonight, I only played Warzone (which is LMS), which is GoW's primary gametype. I therefore cannot speak on Execution or Assassination, but Warzone is definitely a clear choice for competitive play and will require a lot of coordination to succeed in.

All in all: the gameplay delivers. Individual skill and team skills are necessary in order to play this game and have success with it.

I'll continue things with possible settings for competitive play for several maps. Expect that tomorrow evening.

I have a few complaints so far in the game. The controls could be better. After playing the new R6 demo, i can say that Gears would be much better with this way of taking cover. Instead of off/oh with the A button they should have had HOLD LEFT TRIGGER for cover and let go to expose. I would also have made left thumbstick for run, push and run. Of course some other things woulda had to change but i think the cover situation would be ALOT smoother....its not too much of a problem unless you get stuck in cover mode when someone is close.

thats about it! great game!

UOD we played over 100 online matches with pro players and newbies too, i cant say who is the best but Rosco with Jamie are getting most kills on 80% of the maps then it's me and the rest of us.
So far we played only Warzone but i think we will try Assassination and Execution in couple of days.
I cant speak for the rest of the team but i prefer shotgun, saw rifle only and smoke granades.
And yeah team skills are must, me and Gem are providing cover and Rosco with Jamie usually do the kills.
Awesome game !

Yup it works pretty well when we team up! can't wait to get some more action in! Gem and i were practicing weapons on each other today. Surprisingly the range doesnt' seem to matter as much as we first thought. 2 steps seems to be the sweet spot for shotty! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Sadly doing this has seemed to open up the question of how much depth the game has. The bullets do the same damage it seems from chest to head and doesn't matter the range... :wth:
