View Full Version : Thinking about an upgrade

Well, i just went out and bought a new 150 gb Raptor and with the realization of needing to reinstall i thought why not overhaul the whole pc while im at it. I dont really need an upgrade as my 3.2e and 6800gt seem to get the job done, but since i dont like redoing windows that often anymore, i wanted to future-proof my new windows installation(hehe) by going ahead and getting my hardware a bit more up to date.

Anyway, im seriously looking at the new Conroe setup from intel, should be out in a couple of weeks. From what i've been reading it will outperform most of the AMD setups and cost less which is double bonus. Was about to pull the trigger on an X2 setup but i think i will wait a couple of weeks before deciding.

Anyone else have any other thoughts on this?

A e6700 (2.66ghz) substantially outperforms a fx60.

I just ordered a gigabyte p965 board from newegg last night. I plan on getting the e6600. I also ordered a x1900xt and 2 gigs of ddr2 800.

I had a p4 640 and ended up putting my 2.4c back in. Also have a 6800gt. Im upgrading since my system is showing its age, especially at the 1600x1200 of my samsung 204b.

Right now if you want the top Conroe go E6700 FTW! Yes the 66 outper forms the FX-60 but I believe the FX-62 AM2 chip is right with it.. I'm not much of a intel fan anymore but give it a few months AMD will bite back against this E6700 champ that they have released. You won't see me doing another system till after the 1st of the year cause alot of things are in the making that will hold a major jump in upgrades off for a full year and well into 2008!!!

If I had to make a new system now I'd either go with the FX-62 AM2 setup or the Intel E6700.... but your lookin at some kick ass ram to go here as well as stepping up to at least a 7800GT min in graphics. You already have a raptor which will get bottlenecked without a nice CPU and GPU.

One thing to consider is overclockability. The 6700 doesn't seem to have a problem hitting 4ghz. And I've always been a big fan of intel chipsets :)

Isn't amd's next big thing the k8l? I don't think its coming out until next year.

Well lets put it this way.. I hope your not reading reviews from Toms Hardware.. as that site is endorced big time by Intel.. and the word around the net is that the bench test with Conroe chips against the FX-60 and 62 were rigged to show a big performance gain over AMD which is a load of crap if you ask me.. I'm not convinced that Intel has done anything yet.. Hell look at Dell they are slowly converting their whole company over to AMD... starting with servers now they have Alienware.. its only a matter of time before Intel goes the way of the MAC! :D

.

The only problem with waiting till the next great thing is that when it finally comes out the next great thing will be out in another 6 months as well. As is always the case with trying to keep somewhat up to date with pc hardware, is the 'buyers regret syndrome.' At some point you just have to commit and buy because the cycle keeps going and going.

I'm still not sure what motherboard to go with...Asus probably but not sure what model to get yet...more reading to do.

yes I love my ASUS.. if you go with 939 socket I love my SLI Premium! Lots of space between the PCIex slots and great OCing ability..

I'll let you know how my Gigabyte board does with my 640 on it.

I've had abit boards for years, so this is my first try of a Gigabyte.
