Another Gas Thread......

What's your breaking point? How high does gas have to get before you say enough is enough and start riding a bike or you sell your car and get a mini compact car. There've been many failed attemps to boycot gas companies with no one really taking it serious cause we need our cars. But how high does it got to get before you put your foot down and take some serious changes in your gasoline usage... Gas could hit $4.00 gallon this summer...

Gas up by me is at about $2.80 and about $.20 more in the city. Trailblazer has a 22 gal tank, which normally last me 5 days due to my spirited driving :D Now i've been taking it easy and it's been last me 8 days, using cruise control more on the highway and staying below 70. Also after doing some research, I ignored the tire PSI rating for the factory tires (30/35) and made them 40/40, with the max PSI being 45. Gas mileage went up, and acceleration is smoother, though at the price of a slightly rougher ride. I don't regret getting the TB, since it's been giving me very good gas mileage recently for it being such a large SUV. But I read somewhere something about $5+ per gallon. Now if it got that bad, I would have to get rid of the DVR/HD cable box, get regular cable and chop down the bandwidth on my ISP :rotfl:

NOT driving isn't an option for me, since driving is what gets me to my paycheck........

Exxon just past Walmart on the Fortune 500 list and is now # 1, gee, I wonder why? :rolleyes: Def some price gouging going on!! :mad:

At current prices I think we spend about $140 a month on gas, it's definitely eating into our fun money. Hope prices drop but I know it's not likely. I'm really lucky because I have a company vehicle to drive to and from work, that probably saves me $75 a month in gas. Not to mention wear & tear on my vehicle.

LOL, I wouldn't give it up unless it was time for a new car. And I don't pay that much more for the TB than I do for the 4 cylinder Altima that the wife drives. I'd be complaining even if I had a 4 banger that got 30+ MPG....the point is that a price jump of $.50 in a span of about 3 weeks is insane.

I live a mile from work and 3/8 mile from my happy hour spot. I dont spend much on gas, I fill up once a month, sometimes get 5 weeks out of a tank. Winter a little more because of longer idle. My 2001 car has only 34k miles on it. My old ladies car otoh is her shopping/soccer mom car which has 10k on it and its a 2005. Our long trips will be hampered by gas prices. We may even have to drop our daughter's paper route unless they can give her one near home. Not worth the gas.

Not driving is also not an option for me. Since I still live in the boondocks, there is no public transportation in this area. I could drive the ten miles into town to make use of it, however some of my work locations are also not on their route or even close. I also have to have that flexibility for my patients, so not much choice!

Gas in our area rose 14 cents in the last two days. What I can and have done about it is to organize my driving trips a bit better, and map out a route for doing several chores at one time. I try to do my running for all supplies, etc. once a week, and make a loop so to speak of the places I need to go...thus cutting down mileage, gas use and employing a much more direct path...thus eliminating criss crossing, extra miles etc. It's maddening!!

$1.75 /gal was my breaking point. After that, I began cutting down on discretionary spending and driving as little as possible. (read "little as possible" as 22,000 miles/yr) I guess cutting out extra spending altogether is next. :nod:

I'm no economist, but the way I see it, for every extra penny I pay at the pump, there is one less penny for me to put back into the rest of the economy. Someday after the long-term economic effects of all this oil inflation really sets in and we find our country on the virge of another major depression, Uncle Sam will begin to ask why so many markets went down the tubes.

Oops, sorry Uncle Sam, I tried to go out and spend money in the plethora of discretionary markets available to me in this fine country, but I just don't seem to have the extra money available anymore. Oh well, don't frown Uncle Sam, you may be able to sell your discretionary goods & services to someone else overseas or to those who are wealthier than I. We still have a lot of wealthy people in this country, right Uncle Sam? Huh? Whats that? The rich people are losing money too because their markets are declining? Sorry to hear that Uncle Sam, but you might want to go see why those in the oil markets are still smiling so big while the vast majority of us are now spending so little on discretionary goods & services.

The point I'm getting at: Nothing will matter and nothing will change until the wealthiest pockets begin to feel the pinch and long before the wealthy folks feel the pinch, those financially below them will be squeezed right out of the picture and left to fend for themselves, hence the reason I believe this mess will eventually spiral out of control.

Don't forget that MUCH higher fuel efficiency has been more than possible for decades but those device patents are held by the oil industry, of course.

GM & Ford already make and sell thousands of popular model cars, SUV's & trucks that run on cheaper alternative feuls, they just build them and sell them in other countries that can't quite afford normal gas prices.

In Argentina, when you're not driving behind a Pugueot taxi or a Fiat, you are most likely behind a Ford Focus or Chevy "1.8L Turbo" Blazer running on alternative fuel.

There are a few things you can do besides trying to consume less gas.

First, write your congressmen and ask them why in all the years they knew this was coming, they didn't stand up to the auto industry and insist on better gas mileage instead of relaxing the standards under Bush II.

Ask why they haven't insisted on stiffer energy conservation laws over the past 30 years.

Ask them why they haven't insisted on more funds into alternative forms of energy. Especially those with less green house gas emissions.

Lastly, ask them cowards why they didn't take Cheney to task over his closed door energy sessions 6 years ago.

So far after 6 letters, I've yet to get a real response from mine, other than the typical form letter....Dear, Mr. downhill, thank you for writing to the honorable Sen. XXXXXX. Mr. XXXXXX will have to take some time to research your questions and will get back to you.

Sometimes a Nickel or Dime more, or other places less, however the difference in the Mileage is where the savings lay.

You can almost double the mileage of most Vehicles by using Diesel and also save on parts for tuneups etc. It really is a considerable savings over Gas.

A VW Golf Diesel is a very practical car and yet offers pretty close to a regular powered car performance and comfort blebs.

Yup I often drive a lot...it varies...some down weeks I'm not going far...but other weeks..I'll be all over the place. Past few weeks did a lot of work down around New Haven.

Gas tank in the Liberty is somewhere around 20 gallons..forget if it's 19.something or 20.something.

I drive with a relentless lead foot...90-ish everywhere...and the 3.7L in the Jeep is thirsty as heck when doing so.

Ah, yeah, lead foot will win everytime LOL! I've been driving miss daisy recently and the mileage calculator on the Trailblazer stays above 23MPG on the highway, some flat stretches, will hit 27. Have been staying at or below 75 on the NY Thruway, in the right lane, watching everyone fly by me :rotfl: Sometimes I just wanna step on it and hear the intake scream, but my better judgement keeps me in check :D

Well, my commute is 53 miles one way five days a week, which sucks. My wife is a stay at home mom but does the "normal" amount of running. I have a 97 Dodge Ram that I use to pull my boat but my commuter is a 93 Beretta V-6 that pulls 30 mpg on the freeway.

If gas hits $ 3.00 a gallon (which it will) I am going to go to a four day work week. I work 7:00 to 4:15 M-T and 7:00 to 12:00 noon on Fridays, so I can work tens M-T and hopefully get away with it.

We also have a summer place upnorth that's a 3 hour drive that we spend a lot of time at, so I'm thinking of ways to continue the trips up there and save $$.

What ya gonna do ? Deal with it I guess. It's a good job. :thumb:

Yeah, funny thing is, that now that the engine is beginning to break in, I've been seeing much better gas mileage, but nowhere near the 30 MPG of the wifes Matrix, so we're doing the whole car pool thing.

I gotta tell the boss that that $.445 per mile pay out when I travel to our branches isn't gonna cut it anymore...........

The tank on the Matrix is about 12 Gals and last about a week. Filled it up the other day, cost about $28 and will last the entire work week, which isn't bad. I'll just use my gas guzzler on the weekends and to run errands after work LOL

I'm really doing this because a ton of bills just popped up that we were soooooooooooooo not expecting. Wifeys school loans all decided to kick in at the same time, and now they wan't their $$$ lol

My company is sending me to work in PA on Saturday (unpaid), it's a 130 mile one way trip, so I am thinkin of askin for an increase, not sure.

Stations around here have topped the 3$ for regular grade...and its prob going to go higher cause of a jump to 75$ in oil.. Its crazy..the gas already in the stations is there!! Its not new gas that costs more its still the same as it was before so why in the hell is the price jumping so quickly in just a few hours is what I can't figure out. We shall see 4$ by end of summer and by then everything else will jump in amounts and yet I know around here jobs are not paying as much as they need to to keep up with this major increase we have.. Word, before, when my job would send me to a site in Jersey, or if I was on my way home from the city, and I had to cut through Jersey, I would make a point to fill up in NJ, since it's about 15-20 cents cheaper per gallon. Now, I don't even care lol

I use Diesel. Currently $1.34 a litre.

Just finished upgrading the scrolling price signs for one oil company. The new scrolls max out at 19 for unleaded. That equates to 199.9C per litre.
This same company also posted a way over the top record profit for the financial year just gone.

Not sure exactly..but I'd say 60 or better. My 1100 gets around 50-55 mpg.

Regarding gas prices, our's jumped from 2.99 to 3.12 yesterday. My local gas station went from 3.01 to 2.96 yesterday! I thought, "damn, that's cheap. I better stop and fill up." LOL.

Was mentioned that our gas prices went up .13 cents was because of a refinery in St. Louis stopped producing gas because of the storms last week. Whatever. :rolleyes:
