View Full Version : Slimming Down XP...Wow! Never saw anything this detailed before.
Hi to All
Caught this in Fred Langa's Newsletter a couple of days ago and it is mind boggling to me at least. If nothing else its an education in your OS.
I can only imagine the amount of time this guy spent on it. Crazy stuff.

I used a free utility called nLite and made an xp install cd w/ SP2 slipstreamed. Total size of the cd = just under 250 MB! Stripped out almost all unwanted windows services, applcations and features.
nLite:

btw, this stripped version is running quite stable and extremely fast on a celeron 433 w/ 128 RAM.
Hi TonyT
I had that for Win98 and it did a good job their as well. He recommends its usage here also for Disabling "Windows File Protection." He suggests you download the Trail Version to do so.
His in depth study of what can and can't be taken out is nothing short of amazing imho.
Well worth a read.
Thanks TonyT, Good to see Your Smilin Face again:)

Hi drdoug99
I'm still Deleting things i shouldn't :rotfl:
This really is a tutorial of sorts. Man he goes into Detail alright. He must have spent months on this.
I used a lot of it and no problems at all, but some of it was simply too much to bother with, so i let it go. It did however remove a huge chunk for me though.
Thanks drdoug and Back Up...Hahaha:)
Enjoy your day and Thanks:)

Sorry Larry I meant to comment on your thread when I first read it. Wow! I've been reading and I must say there is a lot of great information enclosed in those links.
Hi MadDoctor & JCOS
MadDoctor
As mentioned i bought and used it when i had Win98SE. Worked great. Don't know why, but i never bothered when i went to Win2k.
This Fella goes a step beyond, however it takes a lot of time and effort to do so.

JCOS
For you Guys that actually know what your doing, i'm sure it has a lot to offer. He explains everything with great detail.
For Guys like me, i just lift its skirt and touch things i'm probably better off not touching:D
But it is fun ;)

Thanks Guys and have a wonderful day:)

Hi everyone. Thanks for the kind mention of my guide. Bumped into this thread doing a Google search for something or other.
Just to let you all know, there has been a domain change for my guide. A very nice lady who lives in England actually bought and paid for the site, and then gave it to me, just so my guide would always have a home.
Here's the complete guide...

But this is handy to help you pinpoint certain aspects of the guide...

Thanks, pie, but I guess I've been here before. Because come to find out, I was already a member with 1 post. Guess I must have had a question or something whenever that was.
I know I've always been a big fan of SpeedGuide. Man, did SpeedGuide ever help me when I got my first computer. I always used the tweaks SpeedGuide offered to improve my Internet connection and speed.
Anyway, hello.

Thats how I found this place as well. Owning a computer biz and often needing to tweak systems and what-not, this place has been a wealth of knowledge. Again, welcome. Good to see new faces here at SG

Oh, I found my first post. I remember now. I joined because of one of the computer gurus you have here at SpeedGuide, mccoffee. I had been reading some of his posts, and thought, "This guy knows his stuff."
So, I thought would ask him if my Services settings would be okay using SBC Yahoo DSL, since I had just switched to that service provider.
I know Cable is very cool, but I'm pretty happy so far with SBC Yahoo DSL. Cable just got too expensive here in San Diego...at least for my tastes.
Besides, if I need more speed out of my DSL connection, where better to ask then on SpeedGuide.

I had E-mailed my daughter earlier this morning to ask her if she would print out my guide for safekeeping, since I don't have a printer myself.
She just now E-mailed me back.
Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide comes out to 195 pages of print. Wow! 195 Pages! I had no idea. Although, it did I kind of feel like I was writing and editing a novel! LOL

You're very welcome, morbidpete. That's exactly why I did it--for people who always wanted to know what they could remove from XP, but who could not find the answers.
When I had Windows 98, I would search and search for answers. I could find nothing but certain temp files.
When I got Windows XP, I began joining tweaking forums, and asking there what could be deleted from XP. Nobody knew...and everybody thought I was out of my mind for wanting to delete files and folders from my installation.
So I set about removing files on my own and cataloging my findings for people like me and you.

Has anyone read far enough along in above URLs to note whether the "slimming" down of XP was strictly for standalone boxes or networked?

That's a good point, major marco. I'm on a stand alone machine. Never got into networking...that might be a completely different guide.
If it were me, and I was on a network of computers, I'd be careful not to delete those components...Like certain Services I delete for sure.

Hi Bold_Fortune
Nice to meet You:)
I'm usually here on a regular basis, but have been away helping my Mom recover from a stroke. Just popped home for a night and gone again for another while. Turned on the comp and noticed your Post.
Always pleased to see new faces and especially those of such obvious knowledge in things computer. Good group of Folks here and hope to see more of you down the road.
Thanks for your updates and for the original as well. It has been an invaluable guide.

Hi everyone, it's been a very long time since I posted here. I ran into this thread again doing a search for me. (Thank sounds funny. lol)
I wanted to let people know what has happened to my site.
My site is down, and will remain down. It was never really "my" site, it belonged to Sadie, a lady who lives in England. She gave it to me to support my work on Slimming Down Windows XP: The Complete Guide. You can read more about it here...
http://www.graphixanstuff.com/Forum/index.php?showtopic=9354
....Jan has hosted the guide for you in the event of something like this happening. Jan's copy of my guide is the only copy that I have granted permission to host, and it is the only copy posted on the Internet I keep updated. It's there for you when you need it.
The guide was always for you. That's why I created it. It is my gift to those who always wanted to know which files they can delete from Windows XP, but couldn't find their answers...my site was only an after thought.
The guide is here for you when you need it...
