Wireless security help.

Just setup a wireless network sharing my internet connection. The router is a D-Link DI-524 and the adaptor card is a DWL-G630 (laptop).

They both support WPA encryption but for the life of me I can't configure the adaptor card to this option, only WEP.

I've already looked on the support pages of D-Link and still can't get it to work.

Anyone help pleaseeeeeee

Or is there any other ways to secure my network.

The router is setup for WPA-PSK or WPA? Set it to WPA-PSK with a long key, right click your wireless connection in network places, goto properties, wireless networks (make sure let windows handle wireless settings is checked and you dont have any dlink wireless software running) goto wireless networks and if you see your router in there, highlight it and click the properties button. Under network authentication select WPA-PSK and under that use TKIP for encryption. Put the network key in and ok everything and boom.

The problem was that I had the D-Link software running at the same time I was trying to enable WPA.

Ok, now that I have it enabled, the connection keeps on dropping.

things to check that may be causing interferrence is...... cell phones or cordless home phones close to the router/access point or the client/wireless nic. thry to look for anything close to it that could be causing interferrence with the radio signal.

if you know someone else with a wireless nic you could try to get them connected and see if they expirence the connection drops as well for troubleshooting

another possibility is make sure your using latest drivers for your nic.....check on their website for the driver.

yet another possibility is faulty hardware.

hope its an easy fix for ya......figuring out these wireless connection drops can be a real pain in the arse.

Try changing channels on the router as well

Thanks for the advise Amplifer.

There is a cordless phone right next to the router but why is it that the connections drop only while the WPA-PSK encryption is enabled? It works totally fine when I use 128bit WEP.

I'll give the changing channel a shot. ;)

Did changing the channel help? One other major killer is microwaves. Most of them use 2.45ghz and when running can majorly affect your signal/transfer rates (ive tested this myself and proven it, as it will drop connection speeds from 54mbps to 24mbps, signal level will bounce wildly and speeds are intermittant since the card and the microwave signals are fighting for space in the spectrum).

One other thing you should do is upgrade your firmware on the router to 3.02, there are a few problems with 3.00 with connectivity.
