View Full Version : 2 routers?

I'm getting a 2nd computer. I'm currently on my parents wireless network(108 Netgear), however I will be moving out and need my own network is it possible to set up a 2nd router wired to both of my computers and wirelessly connected to my dad's router(which is wired to the internet connection). Having access to the other systems on the network is not important only access to the internet connection.

Alternatively my new MoBo(DFI Lanparty Ultra-D (http://www.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_product_spec_details_r_us.jsp?PRODUCT_ID=3471&CATEGORY_TYPE=LP&SITE=US)D) will have support for dual gigabit connections. The other system would need to have an adapter card added(MoBo MSI K7T Turbo2) and only has PCI(no PCI-e) slots. Would it be possible(and would I see a speed boost compared to a 100 network?) to take advantage of a gigabit network for faster file transfer between my systems and use a wireless connection for internet access to both systems?

when you say "move out"......you will be moving feet or miles away?

distance will obviously make a differeence here....if your moving across town....the below gear wont work.......if your moving next door itll probably work.

ive never done it but i would think you could hook a router (the one that the 2 machines ar running from) and run the wan port of the router into a wireless bridge..... http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=36&prid=603

there is also this......a way to connect them and remian on the same network if desired for any reason.

It sounds almost like you just want a wireless access point, the WAN ports of routers are not wireless, only the LAN side.

How far away are you moving? Like to a mother in law apartment connected to the house or something?

Cat is right, you need an access point, and probably an external yagi antenna would be a good idea.
