Hello,
I am interested in getting some opinions of my situation, since I don't have much experience with routers and it looks like the company I am talking to is giving me the runaround. Sorry about the "story", but I figure this is the best way to explain what I did.
I have a DLINK 604 router, acting as an intermediary between my DSL modem and 2 computers. I have a 3mb DSL connection I've purchased.
This is my 2nd DLINK, the first one started "magically" turning off my port forwarding. The new one was acting strange to, it was rebooting itself every once in awhile. But this behaviour went away after the latest firmware download.
After I fixed the rebooting problem, I started looking into the speed issues that I'd been noticing. I trade alot of stuff through p2p so I utilize my bandwidth pretty extensively and I'd been noticing slow speeds on browsing when my p2p wasn't downloading very much. I talked to my DSL provider, they said they showed me only utilizing 30% of my available bandwidth and that my line quality looked great. They suggested I hook up directly to my DSL modem using RASPPOE.
So what I did was I maxed out a bittorrent client and a emule client with a bunch of files and ran it behind the router. I saw a max download speed of about 1mb over time. I then hooked up directly with the RASPPOE and saw a max download speed of over 2mb (same files).
I called DLINK to explain the problem and talked to someone who didn't seem very sure of himself who told me I could get a RMA and send it back. Since I didn't want to be without a router for that period (and this would be my 3rd one), I waited till today and talked to someone else. This new person seemed unwilling to listen and kept saying that they "didn't guarantee the speed", which I assume means they didn't guarantee the speed of internet access (duh).
Anway, do you think that my test was valid? Do you think the Dlink isn't working correctly? Can you recommend a better router with better support?
