Hi, I just got dsl yesterday and have a question. People keep saying you can theoretically only reach about 1.2mbps, but I seem to be getting higher than that. On every test I go to I have gotten 1.3-1.4 mbps, and not just a little bandwidth spike, I would repeat the test like 10 times and the speed stays the same, am I seeing fake speed, or can I really acheave this on a 1.5mbps connection ?

Due to transmission overhead, u will only see about 85% of ur rated speed, and your getting pretty close to that (In fact, a little bit over so ur connection looks good). What test sites r u using?

glc1 nailed it.

False advertising by the DSL companies so you only can get about 85% max of what they say you will get.

I have used them all and I could repeatedly do the tests on each site and get the same results. I am more fond of 2wire's test though because It acts like a tool off of your hard drive that measures speed, dslreports is good also.

all of them say that my upload is around 200 kbps, and my download is around 1.3mbps, sometimes they constantly show 1.4mbps.

I've done repeated tests at dslreports and after I tweaked with sguide_tweak_98_PPPoE I average 95% of my 1 mbps cap. The tweak gave me an extra 10%.

Hey Drew,

Because you're in Ottawa I'm guessing you have Bell sympatico service. Do you have a Nortel modem or one of the new Alcatel modems?
