I was in DOS messing around, and i type: ipconfig /release.. it did whatever, and kicked me offline, as i figured it might.. I restarted and everthing was fine. I was just wondering what this does, and what does it mena by releaseing it? Does it mean it's releasing it so the SERVER can assign me new info (even though i still hvae the same ip) any info would be great. Also does anyone know a site that i could find refrence to all this "stuff" for instance, learning all the terms "DHCP" and how it works and everything else that goes along with it? THanks

Next time, I hope you dont try Format C: /s when booting from your A: drive with a Boot Disk.
When you release your IP your computer no longer has any IP address configured to run on the internet (or any network that was released)
You can "renew" or reboot your computer and the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Server will assign you an IP address again. Dpending on the Server assigned address license timeframe, you may end up with the same IP or a New one. But that is controlled by the DHCP server, Not in your machine that is making the request.
BTW please don't format you C: drive unless you want to lose everything on the drive.

ipconfig /release is simply, RELEASING your IP.
You dont have to restart to go back online. just type ipconfig /renew will do

Life's A Bitch
That's Why I Like It
Does the IP effect download speeds/ping times? I've realeased and renewed a few times and some of the IPs I get seem to give me faster pings? Is this true, or am i just crazy?

type ipconfig/? at the dos prompt and it lists all the ipconfig options. on win nt and win2000 this is how you release and renew ip's.
