I would like to reformat a hard drive on an old P1 computer and do a clean install of Win XP. Is this possible?..advisable? Also, if this is  both possible and advisable, how do I find instructions on formatting, etc?
Thanks
Here's how you do it:
Step 1: Open Window
Step 2: Proceed to throw P1 violently out the window
Step 3: Close window
All done.
Advisable? Heck no. Possible? Doubting that too...
Not a good idea installing XP on such an old machine, you'll probably run out of RAM just booting up the computer! An old P1 box is best suited for Windows 98, which has a much smaller "footprint."
You know, you really should get a new computer - if possible - you're so far behind the curve. You can get an inexpensive computer with a Celeron processor that will do basic things such as email, Office applications, surfing, etc.

I just bought a new computer (P4 3.2 that replaced a P3 700.) I just wanted to increase the functionality of the "antique" computer to use as a 2nd backup on the Lan. How about if I tried it with the P3? (Still would like to know how to start fresh with HD.) :)
Thanks!

Thanks! How much RAM does the P3 box have? You'd want at least 256MB.
To start fresh with the HD, just put the XP CD in your CD-ROM drive and reboot - it will say, "Press any key to boot from CD." After the initial file copying, and when you're on the appropriate screen, delete your existing partition. Then create a new one and format using the NTFS file system. Once that's done you can proceed with the fresh installation. Very simple.
Make sure you run the Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft to make sure your system is compatible with XP. You can download it from Microsoft here:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Utility/1.0/WXP/EN-US/UpgAdv.exe
If you boot into the XP install disk and do a clean install you'll eventually be prompted where to install, if you want to format, and what filing system: NTFS/FAT32.
