checking to see if this is a decent card (as far as good drivers and updates and compatabilities with software/games and such.

my TB Santa Cruz refuses to run on this mainboard with the 9800Pro on this mainboard (Gigabyte K8NS-Ultra 939). if i install the soundcard in any PCI slot, the Radeon flips out and freezes the system with a garbled graphics mess (so maybe it;s the radeon refusing to be associated with the Santa Cruz).

anyways, running the actually-not-that-bad onboard audio for the time being. it;s against all my principals when it comes to building a system for myself, so i need to at least l;ook for something other than a Creative Labs soundcard if at all possible.... something 5.1 with a 1/8" SPDIF-out of at all possible, but not totally necessary.

What exactly are you going to be using it for? If you don't have to have the 5.1 I can make a couple of suggestions but if the surround sound thing is a requirement I'll have to put my thinkin' cap on.

well, after some mild stressing out, a mainboard BIOS flash and some PCI slot card shuffling, i got the Santa Cruz to play nice with the Radeon.

however, i am still interested in what lies out there. if i were to get something it would need the following criteria... a) 5.1 or better, b) not Creative Labs, and c) has a (non-optical, 1/8th inch plug) SPDIF out.

i appreciate the help, Easto. don;t spend a bunch of time on it since i'm nolonger in a hurry to buy something. i wouldnt mind any suggestions if you know any offhand.

Didn't it come with an SPDIF out? Much as I'd normally agree that, a couple of years ago, the onboard sound systems had the sound quality of a walmart brand clock radio undefwater in a fishtank. But lately, esp the ones with the nForce chipsets...they've been quite exceptional.

Dork around with the onboard firewall at all? Somewhat of a full blown NAT router in there, isn't it?

I have and use the M-Audio Revolution 7.1

updates are not frequent :(

but i haven't had any compatibility problems, and the sound output is great

Faust...BIG WARNING!!!!!!

This card does not process 3D Direct Sound....it offloads it to your CPU which has been identified as a big culprit in lag for games like BF1942.....The Audigy line has hardware support....the M-Audio does not.
