I might sound like a moron, but what is PPPoE?

Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet.

It's an extension of the PPP protocol that dial-up modems use. Commonly used by DSL suppliers. If you have DSL with PPPoE you will need to log in every time you connect. It helps the ISP by freeing up IP addresses when users are off line.

... and it's dynamic. Uses VPN (Virtual Private Networking) to route data, too.

i actaully had this on my old ISP, it sucks ass! you use MS dialup networking just like a dialup modem, and it blows.
