Will 802.11b affect my broadband gaming?

I just got Insight cable internet service installed today, and the people who installed it said it would be easier to run the wiring to our main floor and keep the cable modem there. But all my computers are in the basement connected to an 802.11b router via normal ethernet cables (the wireless was originally just for my PDA and my dad's laptop).

So I have three questions. First, I just wanted to verify that I will have to get another 802.11b or g router to connect my cable modem to, correct? Second, I read that 802.11b does not affect the speed of Internet access, correct? Thirdly, my bottleneck for gaming will still be my internet service and not my wireless router, correct?

If you don't want to move your existing router from downstairs to upstairs where the cable modem is, then the answer is yes you will need to but a second router. Unless you move the wireless router upstairs and connect it to your cable modem and buy wireless Nics for your desktop's and other stuff. More expensive going the wireless Nics route in my opinion.

Correct unless your cable connection is capable of exceeding 11MB downstream.



Thirdly, my bottleneck for gaming will still be my internet service and not my wireless router, correct?


11MB either way up or down is more than enough. :D
