You need a seperate dish for it, so one for t.v and one for internet.

if this is in wrong forum please move. Ok I'm in the same boat as you luckily I have details my friend.
I just purchased a house in a remote location in Nova Scotia. I'll be receiving SAT tv from Bell Express Vu. My wife gave them a call and here's the 411.
You need to buy the receiver outright. $169 CND. And the modem, not sure of price. If you have a dish already and from reading the above post again, you do, it saves you around $900. I know that it is steap but I'm just repeating what the Bell CS Rep. told the Mrs. Anywho...
Sending and receiving data is not exactly 100% efficient via sat. You can receive data via the sat but you'll have to use a modem yes with dial up to send data. I was like wtf when I heard this and I install sats on occasion for contracts. I figured a dual or tri LNB like Q mentioned would suffice....nope or at least this is what I've been told by 3 other respected people at work.
So basically you'll receive via sat but transmit (send) via a phone line or what we call dial up. lol
Kind of defeats the purpose IMO to get sat for internet. I mean your going to tie up you lan line anyways so I'm heading into the world of dial up back home. I'll get the 300 channels but I'm not paying Bell bucks to have two services, actually three if I went that route. (sat tv, sat internet, dial up service).
Oh and there is no unlimited package. They say there is but it's 4gigs a month. Each gig over is like $1 but still you know how fast that could add up. I reach 4 gigs just sending work files alone. I like downloading so it's not feasible for me. It's the the cost, it's the technology.
Hope this helps. PM me for further details. ;)
but...if you find a sat isp that has something nifty also drop me a PM. TIA

will check into it a little more as soon as I can & if I find anything nifty I'll be sure to pm you.

I'm 6 kilometers from the nearest CO or hut. Cable I believe is about 2 km away and the local cable companies priorities won't be for a few houses spread out all over the place.

wouldn;t hurt to check, man. with xDSL you are pretty much out in the cold. but, cable can reach.... of course that all depends on the cable co.
the only reason i say this is a good friend of mine had satellite through DirectPC (Hughes, i think) for a couple years until cable was available in his area (about 2 years ago). his upload was restricted to 14.4Kb (analog modem), and his download was roughly 400-450Kbps (yes, that's bits per sec). but, that wasn;t the bad thing..... his ping times to anyplace was horrible. i mean worse than just plain vanilla 56K.
of course this could havce changed in the past 2 years (what;s available through various ISPs in terms of performance), but the unavoidable downside will always be pings. definitely not a gamer's broadband.

That depends on who you use for an ISP ...that's the "old way" of satellite internet (looks like you got stuck with an old ISP..>I'd look for a newer one). There are some out there now that are true two way satellite.
Satellite is decent when broadband isn't in your area, as most satellite ISP's are available in all 48 lower states, as long as you have a good unobstructed skyview. Not great for gaming...has 120ms to start with just by the satellite itself...now add the regular lag on top of that. But don't get stuck with an outdated ISP that uses dial up for upload....that's long gone....or should be. Plenty of new two way satellite ISP's out there now.

I'm on cable now & I'd be moving about 4 blocks away, so cable's there if I want to pay to have it set up at new crib.
thing is, I'm thinking about moving in with a lady due to financial probs, and she's getting free sat, building owner lives downstairs & giving her free access.
this just came up last night. I know nothing about sat internet and wanted the scoop from you guys.
I was a little discouraged by JCOS's info, but looks like I'll be making some local calls on this, gotta find out who the isp is. I don't do any gaming, net is strictly learning and money making for me, my only concern is fast down & upload, and of course cost. kinda lookin like I'd be better off with cable.
I hope JCOS can get a different isp, I'd hate to be stuck with that deal...
thanks to all for the info!
;)
"free" satellite TV is possible, as it's single-ended (all you need to do is have a way to grab the signal in the air and decrypt it or make your reciever blindly accept it somehow ;) ). you don;t necessarily need a return communication to make it work. with almost any kind of computer networking (i.e. - internet), you do. i am not saying it's impossible, as stealing an existant account when it;s not in use is of course possible, but without an account that would be recognized by the ISP's network, you would be hard-pressed to get any kind of 2 way traffic going, which is by it's very nature required by TCP/IP.

I had no intention of 'stealing' service. I don't know how the landlord's got it set up, but I suspect its not something he's told the sat service about. I figured any net access had to be set up with the isp, what i was looking for was what equipment I'd need and basic info about such access, i.e. like if it's slow or not secure, etc.
appreciate the feedback though.
I'm not even sure I'm gonna go live with that woman, that is a last resort...

I'm depending on the wife to do this all and honestly I need too. She's got a lot on her plate at the moment. I need to call a few local sat isp when I get home.
Thanks for the heads up.

oh, i hope you didn;t take that as an accusation (not at all my intent). i was just making a general statement about how it worked.
as far as legally sharing a legitimate account in the same building, that's easy. my friend ran a simple proxy server to share the service between the different computers in his home (wingate was the app i think). if the satellite "modem" has a normal ethernet LAN port, you could probably just use a router instead of needing a computer to run proxy.

Meaning I'm not sure if they sell/service outside the United States...even if just 3 yards over the border...I'm not sure how that works.
