would never work

never.. you could possibly upgrade the processor.. but it still wouldnt be a big hit.. considering when they release new video cards they COMPLETEly have to revamp the structure for new pixel shading and other random crap

but yar

Ah I remember when you COULD "upgrade" your video.

I recall paying $100 for a 1 MB upgrade to my onboard Cirrus Logic video in 1995 for my Compaq Presario 700 (75 MHz Pentium). I plugged the little module into the expandability port and voila! brought the total to a whopping 2 MB.

I was then cruisin' at 800x600 on a 14" monitor LOLOLOL

:D

Meeeeeeeeeeemmmmmmmmmmmmmmmrrrreeeeeeeeesssssssss...........

i guess i misinterpreted the idea... lol... i was thinking of a card that accepted 1's or 5's and according to the money you put in it it would perform better :)

Actually it's been done, even recently.

Back in early Pentium days....VRAM upgrades were common in higher end video cards...both professional graphics cards such as for CAD, and for gaming.

Even quite recently, Matrox made AGP card where you could add SODIMMs (laptop memory)...I have a drawer full of Matrox G-100 and G-200 vid cards where you can add memory.

wouldn't be worth it anymore...

you buy the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO right now w/256 mb memory...

few months later the 9900 Pro will be out..
if it doesn't have more memory..it will have a substantially faster GPU

no doubt u can upgrade the ram.. well you might be able to.. but as new chips come out they have faster gpu's and a different style of layout..

so it would be almost impossible to go from say.. 9500 pro to 256 meg 9800 pro..

"No doubt u can upgrade the ram..."...yet at the beginning of this thread you said "would never work never.. you could possibly upgrade the processor"

You CAN upgrade the RAM on some video cards. Matter of fact...still some professional graphics cards where you can. I mentioned an older one above...that I happen to have several of them in my possession.

"so it would be almost impossible to go from say.. 9500 pro to 256 meg 9800 pro.."

That is true...and that wasn't the intent of this thread...this thread was about upgrading video memory, not the GPU itself.
