Zuckerberg and Gates make proposal for universal Internet access

At the 70th annual U.N. General Assembly session held in New York, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and a host of celebrities have launched a campaign for universal Internet access which would fight poverty. It is called "Connect the World".

In a declaration, the activists insist that the UN and governments should take actions to ensure Internet access for everyone globally by 2020. Yet, 4 billion people around the world do not have Internet access.

"When people have access to the tools and knowledge of the internet, they have access to opportunities that make life better for all of us," the declaration said. "The internet belongs to everyone. It should be accessible by everyone."

"A 'like' or a post won't stop a tank or a bullet, but when people are connected, we have a chance to build a common global community with a shared understanding," Zuckerberg told at a private luncheon with business leaders at the United Nations.

Among the supporters of the initiative are also Bono from U2, actress Charlize Theron, founder of Africa Outreach Project; Bill and Melinda Gates; British entrepreneur Richard Branson; Colombian singer Shakira, Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales and several others.
