Yahoo announced today that starting next month, it will deactivate accounts that have not been used in over a year, allowing people to snap up those once-claimed usernames.

"If you're like me, you want a Yahoo! ID that's short, sweet, and memorable like albert@yahoo.com instead of albert9330399@yahoo.com," wrote Jay Rossiter, Yahoo's senior vice president for platforms, in a blog post Wednesday. "We want to give our loyal users and new folks the opportunity to sign up for the Yahoo ID they've always wanted," Rossiter added.

Yahoo plans to release the inactive accounts unless the current owner logs in again before July 15. After that, the identifications will be available to all comers and will be ready to use again in mid-August.

The announcement comes about a week after the shutdown of Yahoo Mail Classic, making way for the new version of Mail, which launched six months ago. The Web giant announced the discontinuation in April, warning users that beginning June 3, Yahoo Mail Classic and other versions of the Web-based mail services would no longer be available.
