WireLurker Apple iOS virus infects iPhones in China

The US security firm Palo Alto Networks discovered a new malware that infects iPhones and iPads in China through Apple's Mac OS X operating system.

"WireLurker is unlike anything we've ever seen in terms of Apple iOS and OS X malware," said Palo Alto intelligence director Ryan Olson, in a statement. "The techniques in use suggest that bad actors are getting more sophisticated when it comes to exploiting some of the world's be't-known desktop and mobile platforms."

There are two ways for a device to be affected - one is by downloading iOS applications and the other is through the USB cable when the device is connected to already infected machine. It is supposed that about 467 apps have been infected and downloaded over 350,000 times. That's why security researchers doubt that the problem is limited only to China.

"WireLurker monitors any iOS device connected via USB with an infected OS X computer and installs downloaded third-party applications or automatically generated malicious applications onto the device, regardless of whether it is jailbroken," Palo Alto Networks' Claud Xiao writes at the firm's blog.

In response to the revelations about the malware, Apple has blocked the apps in question and has advised users to download and install software from trusted sources.

"We are aware of malicious software available from a download site aimed at users in China, and we've blocked the identified apps to prevent them from launching," Apple said. "As always, we recommend that users download and install software from trusted sources."
