Verizon has introduced a new low end data plan that runs for $20 per month and gives you 300 MB of data. The new plan comes as part of the carrier's Back to School promo to attract more students to use smartphones. It will be available in selected areas only: Washington D.C., Baltimore, Virginia, and selected parts of North Carolina.

The deal will be available from August 18 to September 30. New and existing customers are eligible and the deal applies to smartphones and feature phones. Those who exceed the 300MB data threshold will automatically be charged $20 for another 300MB.

Verizon said the deal is intended for those who have been thinking about moving to a smartphone, but hesitated because of the cost:

"The $20 monthly access promotional plan is an opportunity for customers to learn the many benefits of having a smartphone with email and calendar functions, as well as Internet access and apps, at their fingertips," Mike Maiorana, regional president in Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia, said in a statement.
