Verizon to buy Yahoo! for $4.8 billion

Verizon will reportedly buy Yahoo's core Internet business for $4.8 billion. The deal will include Yahoo's real estate assets, while intellectual property is expected to be sold separately. Yahoo will hold on to its stakes in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan. The deal is expected to be announced today.

"The buyer that could make the most out of these assets has apparently won," said Roger Entner, an analyst with Recon Analytics. "No one could get more out of Yahoo's businesses than Verizon. "

"The deal speaks to a clear strategy shift at Verizon," said Craig Moffett, an analyst with MoffettNathanson. "They are trying to monetize wireless in an entirely new way. Instead of charging customers for traffic, they are turning to charging advertisers for eyeballs."

Last year Verizon bought AOL for $4.4 billion, acquiring its content sites, including the Huffington Post and TechCrunch, as well as ad targeting technology.
