ICANN's will continue to manage assignment of IP addresses and management of top-level domains for another six months, as none of the bidders for the role met the NTIA's requirements.

Some of those requirements, according to the NTIA's notice issued on March 10, included "the separation of policymaking from implementation, a robust companywide conflict of interest policy, provisions reflecting heightened respect for local company laws, and a series of consultation and reporting requirements to increase transparency and accountability to the international community".

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), according to its statement, will reissue the RFP (request for proposal). It remains to be seen whether ICANN will take steps to adjust its organizational structure to better meet the new requirements, or if we will see a brand new entity taking the IANA responsibilities away from the organization.
