U.S. delays giving up ICANN control for a year

The U.S. Commerce Department has announced that it would delay by at least a year its plan to give up the control over the global address system for the web. Instead, the department will renew its contract with the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) until September next year.
"It has become increasingly apparent over the last few months that the community needs time to complete its work, have the plan reviewed by the U.S. government and then implement it if it is approved," Lawrence E. Strickling, the assistant commerce secretary for communications and information, wrote in the post. He added: "This one-year extension will provide the community with the time it needs to finish its work."
ICANN is the current coordinator of the Internet's domain name system. It has been playing this role since it was created in 1998, but last year, the Obama administration said it planned to transfer its oversight to a group of international stakeholders by September 2015.
