Sprint doubles early termination fee to $350

Sprint Nextel announced yesterday that it is raising its early-termination fee to $350 on most advanced devices, which equals the ETF fees other carriers charge.

An ETF is a fee intended to keep users from jumping from one carrier to another. They slowly decrease over the length of the contract, encouraging customers to wait until the contract is over before leaving for another carrier. Previously, the Sprint ETF was $200, which was lower than most competitors.

"Beginning September 9, Sprint is introducing a new pro-rated policy for early termination fees (ETFs) for customers who enter into Service Agreements for advanced devices such as smartphones, tablets, notebooks and netbooks," Sprint spokesman said. "Customers with these advanced devices will be subject to a $350 ETF (which will be pro-rated based on the number of months remaining) should they decide to cancel service before the end of their service agreement."
