Spotify will let employees work from anywhere after the pandemic

Spotify Technology SA will allow its employees to work from anywhere, the Swedish music streaming company said in a blog post on Friday, further upending the future of modern working life.

The program, called Work From Anywhere, allows Spotify employees to pick a Work Mode, deciding with managers whether they'll work full time from home, from the office, or a combo. The company is also introducing more flexibility for workers to choose their geographic location, letting them decide with their managers what city and country they'd like to work from, with some limitations because of time zone difficulties and regional laws.

"As part of our ongoing Dynamic Workplace effort, we're reevaluating our office spaces across the globe for increased sustainability, flexibility, and well-being to ensure that all of our employees, regardless of ability or situation, can work comfortably and efficiently," the company said in a blog post. "The ultimate goal of our new design approach is to ensure that employees have a place where they can focus, collaborate, and create—whether that's at a desk, in a conference room, or in cafe spaces."

Spotify's decision comes on the heels of an announcement from Salesforce earlier this week, in which the cloud computing giant said it would give employees the choice to work mostly from home from now on and also give workers more flexibility around their daily schedules for taking care of children or attending to personal matters. Scores of other major tech companies, include Facebook and Microsoft, have similarly announced major commitments to remote work and letting employees make their new COVID-era work environments permanent going forward, if they so choose.
