The recording industry is not impressed with Google's efforts to rid its search engine of sites that facilitate piracy. Six months ago Google promised to crack down on piracy. However, a top lobbying group today said it has found "no evidence" that Google has followed through with a plan to demote sites with pirated content. "Six months later, we have found no evidence that Google's policy has had a demonstrable impact on demoting sites with large amounts of piracy," the RIAA wrote in its report card. "These sites consistently appear at the top of Google's search results for popular songs or artists." "The sites we analyzed, all of which were serial infringers per Google's Copyright Transparency Report, were not demoted in any significant way in the search results and still managed to appear on page 1 of the search results over 98 percent of the time in the searches conducted," the RIAA's report said. Google, however, took issue with the RIAA's assessment. "We have invested heavily in copyright tools for content owners and process takedown notices faster than ever. In the last month we received more than 14 million copyright removal requests for Google Search, quickly removing more than 97 percent from search results," a Google spokeswoman said today. "In addition, Google's growing partnerships and distribution deals with the content industry benefit both creators and users, and generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the industry each year."
