Record-Breaking DDoS Attack Slows Web

Spam-fighting organization Spamhaus said Wednesday that it had been victim of a massive distributed denial-of- service (DDoS) attack since mid-March, apparently from groups angry at being blacklisted by the Geneva-based group.

"It is a small miracle that we're still online," Spamhaus researcher Vincent Hanna said in an interview.

The company tracks the Internet's spam operations and sources, and maintains real-time, spam-blocking databases that help Internet networks weed out bogus email. The problems began when Spamhaus added a firm known as Cyberbunker to its blacklist.

Experts have warned that this is one of the largest ever cyber attacks and it is slowing global internet services. The sheer size of the attack has already affected Internet users everywhere, according to Patrick Gilmore of Akamai Technologies.

"Based on the reported scale of the attack, which was evaluated at 300 Gigabits per second, we can confirm that this is one of the largest DDoS operations to date," online security firm Kaspersky Lab said in a statement. "There may be further disruptions on a larger scale as the attack escalates."
