Qualcomm announces the world's first 5G modem

Qualcomm has announced that it is working on its very first phone-ready 5G modem, the Snapdragon X50 5G. The chip is expected to be available for testing next year and to start selling in mobile devices in the first half of 2018.
The X50 will offer download speeds as high as 5Gbps (bits per second), where networks support them. That is roughly 100 times faster than peak speeds claimed by most networks that use the fourth-generation technology called LTE, for long-term evolution.
The chip initially supports the 28 GHz mmWave spectrum which offers high frequency coupled with short wave length of radio communication. This 28 GHz band of spectrum is designed to support both 5GTF (5G Technical Forum) from Verizon Communications Inc. and 5G-SIG (Special Interest Group) from the South Korean telecom company KT Corporation.
Carriers and electronics manufacturers will be able to deploy this new modem as part of early 5G trials and deployments at 28 GHz. Still, 5G networks aren't expected to go commercial until 2020.
