OpenVPN to get security audit

OpenVPN, one of the most popular VPN clients today, will be audited by cryptography and network security professor Matthew Green. The VPN provider Private Internet Access which uses OpenVPN, has decided to fund the security review.

OpenVPN is an open source project and has been compiled for everything from Solaris to Windows, passing various Linux and BSD distributions along the way (including OSX); Windows and Android (and jailbroken iOSs); Cisco's AnyConnect product; and it's baked into firmware implementations like Openwrt, Vyatta, DD-WRT and others.

The security audit will target version 2.4 of the OpenVPN client, currently in a release candidate state.

"The OpenVPN 2.4 audit is important for the entire community because OpenVPN is available on almost every platform and is used in many applications from consumer products such as Private Internet Access VPN to business software such as Cisco AnyConnect," a Private Internet Access explained.

The report of the audit will be shared with the OpenVPN community first, before publication, and PIA will help fix any bugs that turn up.
