The US' National Security Agency reportedly hacked 50,000 computer systems globally and infected them with malware, according to the classified documents revealed by Edward Snowden. Dutch media outlet NRC has picked the information off a management presentation that dates back to 2012. It explains how the NSA collects information worldwide. In addition, the presentation shows that the intelligence service uses 'Computer Network Exploitation' (CNE) in more than 50,000 locations. CNE is the secret infiltration of computer systems achieved by installing malware (malicious software). The malware can then be controlled remotely and be turned on and off at will. The 'implants' act as digital 'sleeper cells' that can be activated with a single push of a button. The process itself is nothing new; The Washington Post reported on these exploits in August. These "implants," as they're known in NSA terms, are deployed by a department within the agency known as TAO, or "Tailored Access Operations." Software engineers within TAO allegedly break into various routers, switches, and firewalls - to name a few devices - in an effort to compromise networks and, thus, gain access to the data being transmitted by the devices connecting to them.
