Next-gen HTTP/2 to make for a faster, safer net

The new HTTP/2 protocol has finally been approved. It is the next big version of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, and the first major update since 1999 when HTTP 1.1 was adopted. HTTP is the protocol that describes how web content should travel over the wires.

The main advantage of HTTP/2 will be improved performance, meaning better connections and faster loading pages. It will provide new improved features for developers, as well.

In terms of security, there are also benefits including improved security options, and the new concept of 'cache pushing' that will make it possible to proactively send data to users' caches for later use.

There is one more step, however, for the standard to be officially adopted. It is now on its way to the Request-For-Comments (RFC) Editor where it will be assigned an RFC number. There, after going through an editorial process, it will be published as the new Web standard.
