Netflix's Reed Hastings calls out weak net neutrality rules

In a blog post published on the company's website, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings called for rules that ensure big broadband providers like Comcast Corp. can't keep charging companies such as Netflix a fee to connect directly to their networks - a practice known as paid interconnection, or peering. He said that Netflix will continue to pay "tolls" to Internet service providers to guarantee a good experience for its customers, but called upon the Federal Communications Commission to create net neutrality rules that govern network interconnections.

"The essence of net neutrality is that ISPs such as AT&T and Comcast don't restrict, influence, or otherwise meddle with the choices consumers make," Hastings writes. "The traditional form of net neutrality which was recently overturned by a Verizon lawsuit is important, but insufficient. This weak net neutrality isn't enough to protect an open, competitive internet; a stronger form of net neutrality is required." "Providers like Netflix have always paid for their interconnection to the internet and have always had ample options to ensure that their customers receive an optimal performance through all ISPs at a fair price," he added.

"Netflix believes strong net neutrality is critical, but in the near term we will in cases pay the toll to the powerful ISPs to protect our consumer experience," Mr. Hastings added. "Without strong net neutrality, big ISPs can demand potentially escalating fees for the interconnection required to deliver high quality service."
