Weeks after Netflix made its service available in 130 new countries, the company has announced that it will begin blocking attempts to use VPNs to bypass content restrictions. The decision is a response to increased demands from major Hollywood players. "We are making progress in licensing content across the world and, as of last week, now offer the Netflix service in 190 countries, but we have a ways to go before we can offer people the same films and TV series everywhere," said David Fullagar, Vice-President of Content Delivery Architecture at Netflix. A proxy server or virtual private network (VPN), allow internet users to access content that is unavailable in their country, by pretending that they are connected to the internet from another country. Blocking such proxies is a reasonable move for Netflix. First, it will be able to protect its content investments by ensuring that viewers only get access to the content they have paid for.
