Microsoft launches Viva, its new take on the old intranet

Microsoft has launched what it calls an "employee experience platform" based on Microsoft Teams, its cloud-based collaboration software that is part of its Office 365 applications suite.

Microsoft Viva is Microsoft's new push for helping businesses with remote work and a big bet on this new way of life becoming the norm. It's designed to act as a portal for both employees and businesses to navigate the complexities of working from home.

It's effectively a modern, more elegant take on the company intranet. Viva Connections offers the usual internal communications, communities and policies from a Teams app. Viva Insights, meanwhile, gives you a window into how you and your company are doing, including well-being — it'll help you carve out time for breaks and "focused work" (read: no meetings). That could be particularly helpful for striking that work/life balance as a remote employee. Insights will tap into data from Microsoft apps as well as third-party platforms like Slack and Zoom.

"Today we're introducing Microsoft Viva, the first [Employee Experience Platform] built for the digital era," explained Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Microsoft 365. "Microsoft Viva brings together communications, knowledge, learning, resources, and insights into an integrated experience that empowers people and teams to be their best, from anywhere. Powered by the full breadth and depth of Microsoft 365, it is experienced through Microsoft Teams and other Microsoft 365 apps that people use every day."

Microsoft is launching Viva today, with parts of the platform rolling out throughout 2021.
